SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Richmond’s Mitch Goldberg and Benny Pugh have been named Southern Conference Men’s Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for all games played March 1-7, the league office announced Wednesday. Selections are made by the conference office.

Goldberg, a junior attacker, earned his second weekly honor of the season after notching seven goals in a pair of Spiders wins. The Damascus, Md., product scored three goals and tallied two assists in an 11-6 victory at conference foe VMI on Saturday. Goldberg then proceeded to rack up four goals and an assist in a 12-10 win at No. 9 Duke, helping the Spiders hand the Blue Devils their first loss to an unranked opponent in seven years. He had a hand in 10 of Richmond’s 23 total goals across the two contests.

Pugh grabbed defensive player of the week recognition after allowing only 16 goals in the Spiders’ two victories. The junior from Powhatan, Va., recorded 18 saves in his 120 minutes in the net, including 12 saves against Duke. Pugh ranks in the top 10 nationally in goals against average (7.33).

SoCon lacrosse action will resume on Saturday with all eight teams in action. Three league games are on the docket.

Also nominated for offense: Danny Brown (Air Force) and Matt Thistle (High Point).

Also nominated for defense: Jamie Piluso (High Point).
