SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Troy Reeder and Allie Buchalski have been named SoCon Track Athletes of the Week for the men and women, respectively, after both set school records in the 5,000-meter run, and Samford’s Javion Lee and ETSU’s Kyra Atkins earned field honors, the league office announced Wednesday.
Reeder’s time of 13:59.86 in the 5,000-meter run at the Raleigh Relays on Friday shattered the program’s previous record of 14:09.61, which was set by Tanner Hinkle last season. The mark was good for a first-place finish in the heat and at the time was the nation’s first sub-14-minute performance of the outdoor season. Reeder’s time currently sits fifth nationally.
Buchalski won the women’s 5,000-meter at the same meet by clocking a 16:11.71, the fastest time in the country this outdoor season. Her performance broke Sinead Haughey’s program mark of 16:26.04 from 2015.
Lee snagged men’s field honors with a pair of SoCon-best efforts at the Falcon Classic in Montevallo, Ala., this past weekend. The junior placed first in the triple jump with a mark of 15.10 meters (49’ 6.5”) and second in the long jump with a leap of 7.01 meters (23’).
Atkins earned women’s field honors by posting a long jump of 5.43 meters (17’ 9.75”) at the Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Invitational. Her effort ranks second in the league this outdoor season. Atkins, a freshman, also recorded a SoCon-best time of 13.72 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles at the meet.
