MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University women’s tennis edged past Stetson, 4-3, on Thursday at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. This is the first time since at least 2003 that the Bears have defeated the Hatters.
Due to expected inclement weather, the singles matches were played first.

Roxy Bartz won at flight six (6-3, 6-4) to give Mercer a 1-0 lead in the match. Stetson tied the score, 1-1, with a win at flight five, but Xandra Fougner grabbed a 6-4, 6-3 win at flight two to put the Bears back up, 2-1.
The Hatters won their second point of the match at flight one, but a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win for Grace Korta again gave Mercer the lead, 3-2. A Stetson win at flight four kept the Bears from clinching the match in singles play and forced the teams to play the doubles matches.

Xandra Fougner and Katie Sidor win the first doubles match, but Stetson picked up the second doubles match to keep everything tied up. Katia Stravroulaki and Grace Korta grabbed a 6-3 win at flight one to win the doubles point and earn the win for the Bears.

Next up, Mercer will face Troy on Sunday, March 6 at 10:00 a.m. in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.
