Mercer's Stravroulaki Named Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s Katia Stravroulaki has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played March 7-13. It is the second time the junior has won the award, as she was honored on Feb. 23. Stravroulaki went 5-1 last week as Mercer defeated ULM (4-3) and Evansville (6-1) before falling to ETSU (4-3).

The Rethymno-Crete, Greece, native was a perfect 3-0 at No. 1 singles last week. She picked up wins over ULM’s Pauline Van Herck (6-0, 4-6, 6-0) and Evansville’s Marino Moreno (6-0, 6-1) and pulled out a three-set victory over ETSU’s Lyn Yee Choo (6-3, 2-6, 7-6). Stravroulaki is now 10-3 this spring at No. 1 singles and has won six of her last seven matches.

Paired with Grace Korta at No. 1 doubles, Stravroulaki picked up two wins last week as she and Korta defeated ULM’s Van Herck and Ioana Popescu, 6-1, and downed Evansville’s Kennedy Craig and Katie Delgado,

6-2. Their only defeat came to ETSU’s Yee Choo and Ana Gerbasi, 6-4.

Mercer (8-8, 0-1 SoCon) returns to the courts Saturday (March 19) when the Bears host Furman (6-8, 0-0 SoCon).

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included ETSU’s Marina Espana, Furman’s Ansley Speaks, UNCG’s Sarah Swiderski, Samford’s Carita Moolman, Chattanooga’s Samantha Caswell and Western Carolina’s Stacia Kissell.
