SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU freshman Marina Espana has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played through Feb. 7. Espana is 4-0 in singles play and is 3-0 in doubles competition as the Buccaneers have opened the season 4-0 in dual matches this spring.

Espana opened the spring season with a 6-3, 6-0 win over USC Upstate’s Carol Sigaki. From there, the Castellar Del Valles, Spain, native posted a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins over Appalachian State’s Taylor Bygrave and Tusculum’s Adrienne Kaye. She also added an 8-1 singles win over Morehead State’s Aleksandra Savic.

Teaming with Ioanna Markesini, Espana began the year with wins at No. 2 doubles before being bumped up to the top doubles spot. Espana and Markesini continued their strong play with a 6-4 win over Tusculum’s Franziska Funke and Amanda Sumner.

ETSU returns to the courts Sunday when the Bucs host Emory.

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Furman’s Blair Martin, Mercer’s Katia Stravroulaki, Samford’s Jessica Northcutt, Chattanooga’s Kayla Jones, Western Carolina’s Savannah Taranto and Wofford’s Lauren Reid.
