Bulldogs Complete Action at Buccaneer Invite
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel track and field team wrapped up competition at East Tennessee State’s Buccaneer Invitational on Saturday. The Bulldogs collected several personal records over the two-day meet.
Sophomore Derrick Freeland anchored The Citadel men’s throwers by placing eighth overall out of 40 in the weight throw with a personal best heave of 16.39 meters. That moved him into third all-time in program history in the event. Freeland followed by finishing 20th in the shot put with a top throw of 13.64 meters.
Additionally, a trio of men’s sprinters set personal records in the 200-meter. Tevin Williams clocked a personal-best 22.73 to lead the pack and later narrowly missed securing another PR in the 400-meter with a 50.58. Tyler Jackson ran a PR in the 200, placing just behind Williams with a 23.01 while Josiah Johnson followed with a 23.09.
In the women’s 200-meter sprint, Ty’Rhonza Harris set a new personal best with a 27.31 and cemented the 10th-fastest time in program history in the event. Harris later clocked a 62.69 in the 400-meter.
Senior Caillian Colquitt continued her stellar final indoor season by placing 11th out of 48 runners in the 5000-meter event. She ran an 18:47, just six seconds away from matching her personal best. Colquitt also clocked an 11:10.87 in the 3000-meter to place 17th out of 40.
Sophomore Jamie Cunningham paced the Bulldog men’s distance runners with a 15:53.52 in the 5000-meter event and finished 15th overall among a field of 59 competitors. Meanwhile, junior Ross Jordan placed seventh overall in the 3000-meter competition with time of 8:54.23 and freshman Stephan Kulick finished 19th in the 800-meter with a 1:58.92, narrowly behind his personal-best (1:58.81).
Other notable performances came in the triple jump, in which both Byron Parmely and Asyria Daniels set new personal records in the triple jump with respective leaps of 12.76 meters and 10.60 meters. Daniels’ jump was the second-longest in program history.
Bucs win three events on day two of Buccaneer Invite
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – In its final day of competition at home this season, the ETSU track & field program turned in a steady performance to close out the Buccaneer Invitational Saturday. ETSU won three events and totaled five additional top five finishes in its second to last competition before the conference meet at the end of the month.
Two of three victories by the Bucs came on the track as juniors Simeon Roberts and Matt Moore won the one mile run and the 60m dash. Moore’s victory is his first of the season but this is the third time Roberts has earned a top spot in an event with the previous two also coming at a meet ETSU hosted.
Senior Ashley Kessler wrapped up her career inside the mini dome with a bang as she took the top spot in the pole vault with mark of 3.60m. This is the sixth victory in the pole vault that Kessler has had in her career.
Nathan Rivera and Ashton Wilson also notched top five finishes as Rivera finished second in the heptathlon and Wilson was fourth in the 800m. On the women’s side, Vicki Frans, Keturah Williams and Kiana Davis also finished in the top five in their respective events.
The Bucs return to action next Friday when they travel to Birmingham, Ala. to compete in the Samford Invitational. This will be the final meet before ETSU competes in the SoCon Indoor Championships.
Henderson, Chance take second at Middle Tennessee Invitational for UTC
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s track and field athletes Teghan Henderson (Pickering, Ontario) and Anna Kate Chance () each took second in their respective events Saturday at the Middle Tennessee Invitational at the Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Henderson took second in the Mile, running it for the second time this season and making an improvement in just two weeks.
Also taking second in her race was Anna Kate Chance who was second overall.
Madison Melchionna ran the 400 meter again, placing sixth overall and second in her heat.
Jessica York placed eighth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:21.60 with freshman Haley Morris placing 10th in a time of 2:25.66.
Three men from the Mocs cross country team made the trip to Murfreesboro. John Payne, running in his first meet, won the 3000 meter with a time of 8:56.36. Paul Stuart was ninth in the Mile Run with a time of 4:24.68 and Mark Britt, also competing in his first collegiate track race, ran the event in a time of 4:33.40.
The Mocs will head to Birmingham, Ala., next week for the Samford Invitational to be run at the Birmingham Crossplex. That is the sight of the 2016 Southern Conference Indoor Championships.
Wofford indoor track & field competes at Buccaneer Invitational
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Wofford College men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the ETSU Buccaneer Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the MSHA Athletic Center. Over sixty teams competed in the highly competitive event, with one school record set and one record tied.
On Friday, the women’s distance medley team of Jamie Barnett, Alexandra Burgess, Rebeka Parent and Anya Bunao finished eighth overall in 13:03.62. In the 60 meters, Amber Lust tied her school record at 8.00 seconds. Alexandra Burgess, McLeod Dean and Olivia Head also ran the 60 meters for the women, while Sam Robinson, Conrad Heinrich and Jack McDonald competed in the event for the men. In the 60 meter hurdles, Amber Lust was the top finisher for the Terriers, with Sara Wilson also running. McLeod Dean lowered her school record in the 200 meters to 26.14, with Amber Lust, Olivia Head, Sara Jane Hayes and Faith Jewkes also competing in the 200 meters. Conrad Heinrich, Matt Ransom and Jack McDonald ran the 200 meters for the men. LeAndrea Combo, Olivia Head and Faith Jewkes ran the 400 meters on the women’s side, with Matt Ransom competing in the event for the men. In the 5,000 meters, Dane Szalwinski and Jonathan Rice ran for the men. Kasey Widmyer and Omar Mingo competed in the triple jump, with Kaitlyn Widmyer, Taylor Hall, Alexandra King, and Gaston Hayworth in the weight throw.
During Saturday’s competition, Chandler Washburn, Rebeka Parent, LeAndrea Combo ran the women’s 800 meters. In the men’s 800 meters, Alex Michaels was 16th overall with a 1:58.62, with Ben Hensley and David Grant also running the event. Anya Bunao was 10th overall in the mile with a time of 5:17.56, with Jamie Barnett and Mollie Golicher competing as well. In the men’s mile, Joe Harbacevich was eighth overall at 4:22.91. Alex Michaels, Cisco Ferre and Will Stutts also ran the mile. Emily Williams and Taylor Hall threw the women’s shot put, while Longinus Nnodim threw the men’s shot put and Tevin Johnson competed in the long jump. In the 3,000 meters, Wofford was represented by Shannon McAndrew, Alexandra Christopoulos, Breck Peterson, Halee Rogers, Ben Boatwright, Kenneth Atwood, and Jurdan Mossburg. The Terriers also had teams compete in the men’s and women’s 4x400 relays.
The Wofford men’s and women’s track and field teams are back in action next Friday and Saturday, February 12-13, at the Samford Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama.
Field athletes lead Catamounts at Buccaneer Invitational
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Western Carolina men’s and women’s track & field teams placed 24 athletes in the top-15 at the Buccaneer Invitational hosted by ETSU. Sophomore Corey Ginley, senior Jared Johnson and freshman Jamie Brown took event victories all coming in field events.
Ginley tied for first in the men’s pole vault after clearing 4.95m (16-02.75). Senior Dustin Triplett also cleared 4.95m but took more attempts which dropped him to third overall.
Johnson took the men’s weight throw as he led a group of five Catamounts who took top-14 slots.
Johnson’s toss of 18.44m (60-06.00) topped the field. Sophomore Chase Stehling finished fifth after stopping the tape at 16.73m (54-10.75) while junior Scott Peretin finished one spot back in sixth with a distance of 16.52m (54-02.50). Freshman Dakota Wright continued the roll as he finished in seventh with a throw of 16.43m (53-11.00). The final Catamount in the top-15 was sophomore Mateius Brown who took 14th after tossing the weight 15.01m (49-09.25).
Johnson also finished fifth in the shot put after measuring out at 15.76m (51-08.50). Peretin came in six spots back in 11th with a toss of 14.52m (47-07.75).
Brown continued his strong freshman campaign with a long jump of 7.50m (24-07.25) which led the field.
Sophomore Hailey Cook took second in the women’s shot put with a toss of 14.95m (49-00.75) while placing fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 16.36m (53-08.25).
A trio of Catamounts tied for third in the women’s pole vault, senior Korie Bennett, sophomore Meghan Breden and junior Sage Proffitt all cleared 3.45m (11-03.75) to tie for third in the event.
Freshman Tyrie Adams claimed third place honors in the men’s high jump with a leap of 2.02m (6-07.50). Freshman Draven Crist cleared 2.02m as well but finished back in sixth due to number of attempts. Senior Christian Carswell finished in the top-10 as he tied for ninth with a height of 1.92m (6-03.50).
Junior Chenell Bryan took sixth in the women’s long jump with a distance of 5.66m (18-07.00) while junior Tiffani Lewis claimed 11th with a jump of 5.50m (18-00.50).
Sophomore Alyiah Riley placed sixth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.90 and she was one of just three Catamounts to finish in the top-15 in a track event.
Junior Anisia Starege claimed the last top-10 finish as she tied for eighth in the women’s high jump after clearing 1.60m (5-03.00).
The final top-15 finishes came in the men’s and women’s mile. Sophomore Laney Browder took 12th in the women’s race after stopping the clock at 5:19.45 while junior JC Cornett claimed 13th in the men’s event with a time of 4:24.04.
The Catamounts will now head west for the Samford Invitational on Feb. 12 in Birmingham, Ala., the site of the 2016 Southern Conference Championships.
