SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina’s Torrion Brummitt has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all games played Feb. 16-22. Brummitt averaged a double-double last week, posting 19.5 points and 11.0 rebounds per contest as the Catamounts picked up road wins at Mercer (72-65) and The Citadel (102-97).
The senior led the Catamounts with 15 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Mercer and followed that performance with game highs in points (24) and rebounds (12) and tied a career high with four blocked shots against the Bulldogs. The Columbus, Ga., native shot 57 percent from the field last week and was 7-of-10 at the free-throw line. Brummitt added five assists and two steals over the two games last week.
Brummitt has recorded four double-doubles in WCU’s last six games. The Catamounts have gone 5-1 during that stretch. The senior is 12th in the SoCon in scoring (13.4 ppg) and ranks second in rebounds (7.2 rpg).
Western Carolina (13-16, 8-8 SoCon) returns to action Thursday night when the Catamounts host Wofford (15-14, 11-5 SoCon).
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included The Citadel’s Quayson Williams, ETSU’s Ge’Lawn Guyn, UNCG’s Diante Baldwin, Samford’s Wyatt Walker, Chattanooga’s Chuck Ester, VMI’s QJ Peterson and Wofford’s Spencer Collins.
