Goldberg, Schmitt earn player of the week honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Richmond attacker Mitch Goldberg and Bellarmine defenseman Bobby Schmitt have been named Southern Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for men’s lacrosse, respectively, for all games played through Feb. 15, the league office announced Tuesday. Selections are made by the conference office.

Goldberg, a junior, notched five goals and an assist in the Spiders’ season-opening 11-10 victory at Fairfield on Monday, tying his own school record for goals in a game. The Damascus, Md., native has now recorded a point in 24 consecutive contests and currently leads the SoCon in goals.

Schmitt appeared in his first action since 2014 after sitting out last season with an injury, scoring two goals on two shots and scooping up six ground balls in the Knight’s 11-10 triumph over Robert Morris on Feb. 13 to open up the 2016 campaign. The senior also caused two turnovers.

SoCon lacrosse action resumes Tuesday when High Point hosts Boston University in a 4 p.m. contest.

Also nominated for offense: Chris Walsch (Air Force), Dylan Gatt (Bellarmine), Jonah Moore (Furman) and Dakota Rohlin (Jacksonville).

Also nominated for defense: Reilly McDermott (Furman).
