SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga’s Kayla Jones has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played Feb. 8-14. Jones posted a straight-sets win in singles play last week and earned a doubles victory as part of Chattanooga’s 7-0 victory over Evansville on Friday.
Jones, ranked No. 79 in the latest ITA singles rankings, claimed a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Evansville’s Marina Moreno at No. 1 singles. Earlier in the match, Jones teamed up with Kelsey Coots at No. 1 doubles, and UTC’s top pair posted a 6-4 win over Moreno and Marina Darzyan.
The senior trailed 3-2 in the opening set of her singles match but rallied for the straight-sets win to move her record to 4-0 this spring.
UTC returns to the courts Saturday when the Mocs host Jacksonville State in a 1 p.m. match.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included ETSU’s Lyn Yee Choo, Furman’s Katarina Weymouth, UNCG’s Sarah Swiderski, Samford’s Ellie Gerlach and Western Carolina’s Savannah Taranto.
