SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s Lindsay Thomas and Chattanooga’s Cori Jennings have been named Southern Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games held Feb. 11-14, the league announced Monday. Selections are made by the Southern Conference office.
Thomas, a senior catcher, slugged .824 with an on-base percentage of .724 as UNCG went 4-1 over the weekend, sweeping Kansas in two contests and beating No. 23 NC State 11-10 in eight innings at the Jacksonville University Invitational. Thomas went 11-for-17 at the plate and posted at least two hits in all five of UNCG’s games, adding eight runs and two RBIs. She also recorded 27 putouts in an error-free weekend behind the plate. Against the Wolfpack, Thomas was 3-for-5 with a double and crossed the plate twice for the Spartans in their extra-inning win.
Jennings, meanwhile, was outstanding for the Mocs in the two games she pitched at the NTC Tournament in Clermont, Fla. The left-handed sophomore registered a 0.50 ERA by allowing only one earned run in a pair of victories over Liberty and Bethune-Cookman. Jennings tossed seven scoreless innings in a 3-1 win over Liberty on Friday, allowing only two hits and fanning 11 batters before striking out six more on Saturday, bringing her weekend total to 17 strikeouts in 14 innings of work. The Brush Creek, Tenn., native walked only three batters across the two contests.
SoCon softball action continues when Furman hosts Presbyterian in a doubleheader on Tuesday. The games are slated for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Greenville, S.C.
