SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's tennis team dominated the King University Tornado on its way to a 6-1 victory in its home opener at Reeves Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Terriers (2-1) swept all three doubles matches and took the first five singles matches on their way to the win, with the Tornado (1-4) earning the win in the last singles match of play.
Juniors Haris Poric and Trevor Gotkowski started the day defeating King's Moritz Poswiat and Luis Delgado 6-1 in doubles at the No. 1 position. Seniors David Sklar and Parks Thompson paired at the No. 2 spot and freshman Alan Poric and junior Andrew Graham teamed up at the three position, with both teams earning 6-3 victories in their matches.
In singles, the Poric brothers both earned victories, with Haris Poric beating King's Lenny Keswani 6-0, 6-1 at the one position and Alan Poric defeating Poswiat 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 position.
Thompson faced a tough test from King freshman Jannis Walter at the No. 3 spot. Thompson was able to scratch out a 7-5 decision in the first set before rallying to a 6-1 victory in the second set to take the match.
Sklar cruised in his singles match at the four position against Delgado, winning 6-0, 6-4. Sophomore Parks Schoen also won in straight sets at the six position, 6-1, 6-2, against King's Kyle Logue.
Freshman Kyle Barr suffered the lone defeat for the Terriers on the day. Playing at the five spot against King's Philipp Lindauer, Barr battled in the closest match of the day but ultimately fell to Lindauer 7-6, 6-4 in straight sets.
Thompson and Haris Poric have both started the season unbeaten in singles competition, going 3-0 to start the year.
The Terriers are now 3-0 against King University all-time and extended their winning streak in home openers to three straight seasons. Wofford is 14-7 in home openers since moving to play at the Division I level before the 1995-96 season.
Wofford next takes the court Thursday, as the Terriers face crosstown rival USC Upstate. That match at Reeves Tennis Center is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
