Mercer?s Thompson Named Student-Athlete of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer sophomore guard/forward Amanda Thompson has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held Nov. 30 through Dec. 6, the league office announced Wednesday.

Thompson averaged a double-double (10.0 points, 12.5 rebounds) during the Bears’ 2-0 week with wins over intrastate foes Georgia Southern (77-56) and Kennesaw State (61-46). The Hayesville, N.C., native recorded her first career double-double at home against Kennesaw State on Saturday, tallying career-highs in points (12) and rebounds (16).

Thompson shot 45 percent from the field on the week, including a 5-for-10 performance against the Owls. She also added three assists, five steals and a block over the two contests.

In the classroom, Thompson boasts a 4.00 grade point average as an electrical engineering major.

Mercer (7-1), which is currently ranked No. 11 in the most recent CollegeInsider.com mid-major poll, will take on Georgia Tech tonight in Atlanta, Ga., with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

The General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week recognizes student-athletes that hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 and whose sport is currently in-season. Nominees must have also completed at least one full academic year at their respective institutions.
