WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The UNCG men’s and women’s indoor track teams began their 2016-17 campaign Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Early Bird, the first of two Blue & Gold home meets this season. The Spartans competed against some of the best runners in the area at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
The Spartans had a strong showing on both sides. Three men finished 11th, 12th and 13th in the men’s 800-meter run with Dakarai Shipp leading the way clocking a 2:02.78. Alex Roy earned a top-10 finish in the men’s one-mile run finishing in 4:34.39. Brandon King placed 11th in the mile run crossing the line just three seconds behind his teammate. In the 3,000-meters run David Guthrie finished fifth with a time of 9:14.55.
On the women’s side, Antonia Smith led a quartet of Spartans in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.62 seconds. In the 200-meters Mikkayla Hailey was the top Spartan to finish while Makayla Yables finished 18th overall leading the Blue & Gold in the 400-meter run.
Freshman Taylor Delaney was the top-finisher in the 800-meter run clocking a time of 2:18.56 in her first career track meet as a Spartan.
The Blue & Gold returns to action after a brief winter break at the Virginia Tech Invitational January 13-14 in Blacksburg, Va.
Wofford
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wofford College men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams began the 2016-7 season at the UNCG Early Bird Duals on Sunday at the JDL Fast Track. The Terriers posted numerous top ten finishes and one new school record was established.
In the 60 meters, Bosco Bapoupeleh was the top finisher for the men at 7.12 and McLeod Dean finished at 8.04 to lead the women. Bapoupeleh crossed the line in 23.06 in the 200 meters, while Amber Lust set a new school record in the women’s 200 at 26.04. In the 400, Cody Chavis was the top Wofford finisher at 53.14, with Kassidy Morton at 1:00.97 to lead the women in the event.
Joe Harbacevich was eighth in the 800 meters at 2:00.87, while for the women Mary Stewart Wilson was fifth at 2:24.83 and Madison Paraskeva was sixth at 2:25.43. Jack Zemp was sixth overall in the mile for the men and Cisco Ferre took third place in the 3,000 meters at 9:12.42. Taryn Schoen was second and Anya Bunao was third in the women’s 3,000 meters. In the 60 meter hurdles, Conrad Heinrich was the top finisher for the men and Amber Lust led the way for the women in the event. The men’s and women’s 4x400 relay teams had strong finishes.
In the field events, Omar Mingo was 11th in the long jump at 6.28 meters. Alexandra Burgess took fourth place in the women’s long jump at 5.34 meter and Caroline McWhorter was 11th in the triple jump. Hunter Griffin went 12.98 meters and Emily Williams threw 7.90 meters in the shot put. Gaston Hayworth was fourth in the weight throw at 14.00 meters and Alex King was the top finisher for Wofford in the women’s weight throw.
Among the schools competing in the meet were Furman, Wake Forest, USC Upstate, Campbell, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, UNC Greensboro, High Point, and Savannah State.
After the semester break, the teams will be back in action on January 13-14 at the ETSU Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn.
