The Citadel 40, Coker 3

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel wrestling team advanced to 1-0 on the season after defeating Coker College 40-3 at McAlister Field House on Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs were led by three straight pins in the final three matches of the night. Chandler Sambets (1-0) kickstarted the run for The Citadel with a pin of Jordon Garlow at 1:53 in the first period. Sambets trailed 7-3 in the match before taking down Garlow and finishing with a quick pin.

In the 197-pound match, Sawyer Root (1-0) continued the momentum with a quick pin of Coker College’s Temaris Dixon at 0:39.

Joe Bexley (1-0) finished out the night in front of the home crowd with a fall over Nathan Troutvine at 3:56. The senior led 4-1 after two takedowns in the first period. Bexley picked up three more points in the second period before pinning his opponent less than a minute in.

Patrick Kearney (1-0) opened the meet with a 15-1 major decision victory over Frank Velez at 125. Kearney began the match with a takedown and four-point near fall to grab 6-0 lead after the first period. The sophomore kept the pressure on Velez, grabbing four more points in the second period to lead 10-0.

Wrestling in his first dual match for the Bulldogs, junior transfer Andrew Szalwinski (1-0) picked up a 10-0 major decision victory over Coker College’s Dylan Barrett at 133 pounds. Szalwinski opened up a 4-0 lead after a takedown and two-point near fall in the first period. The junior picked up takedowns in the second and third periods to cruise to the victory.

After a strong showing at the Southeast Open, where he placed sixth, Douglas Gudenburr (1-0) won his first career collegiate dual match at 141 pounds. The freshman began the match in a stalemate against opponent RaSean McArthur with no points in the first period. Gudenburr kicked up the pressure in the second, however, grabbing a 7-0 lead after an escape, takedown and four-point near fall. The Finleyville, Pennsylvania, native closed out the match in the third with a technical fall at 6:53 after consecutive four-point near falls.

Ty Buckiso (1-0) continued where he left off at the Southeast Open with a 9-6 decision over Bret Shurina at 149 pounds. The junior opened up a 6-1 lead in the first period and added to his lead in the second at 9-3. Shurina pushed for the comeback in the final two minutes, outscoring Buckiso 3-0, but the junior held onto the victory in the final seconds.

Aaron Walker (1-0) defeated Jordon Tague in the 157-pound weight class by an 11-4 decision. Walker wrestled a controlled match, leading 2-1 after one period and 5-3 after two. The graduate student dominated the final period 6-1 to close out the match for his first win of the season.

Ruston Hill II (1-0) picked up his first collegiate career dual match victory in the 165-pound match against the Cobras’ Marcus Bisono. Hill opened the match with a takedown, but Bisono picked up a point on an escape before the end of the first period. Each wrestler grabbed a point in the second period to keep Hill with a one-point advantage. The freshman Hill escaped for the only point of the third period, grabbing the 4-2 decision.

Jason Carr (0-1) wrestled a weight class up for the Bulldogs, facing the Cobras’ Jamal Lackey. Carr fell behind in the first period 8-4 and trailed 11-4 after two periods. The senior attempted a comeback in the third with two escapes and his lone takedown but eventually fell by decision, 14-8.

The Bulldogs will continue their season on Sunday at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic in Troy, New York. Their next dual match of the season will be at home against Northern Illinois on Dec. 17.

Davidson 32, Greensboro College 16

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson wrestling had a strong home debut, downing Greensboro College on Wednesday night at John M. Belk Arena, 32-16. The Wildcats took 7-of-10 bouts en route to a victory over the Pride.

The 'Cats registered two pinfall victories, won three bouts via major decision, and also collected a technical fall victory to help secure the match.

In the hole early with a forfeit at 125 pounds, Davidson junior Dustin Runzo battled for seven minutes to claim a hard-fought 5-2 decision to get his team going.

Sophomore Aiden Conroy took a major decision on a 14-2 spread, but it was sophomore Tony Palumbo who delivered, registering Davidson's first pin of the contest, taking down the Pride's Sam Bell in 2:41.

Freshman Conor Fenn recorded the first pin of his collegiate career, bringing Greensboro to the mat with 2:54 on the clock. Classmate Konner Pritchard followed that up in the 184 class, winning via technical fall, 16-1. Junior Will Cooley ended the night with a 9-1 major decision.

The Wildcats return to the mats Friday, Nov. 18, when they host Washington and Lee at Belk Arena. First bout is slated for 7 p.m.
