SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina women’s basketball player Sherae Bonner has been named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held Nov. 23-29, the league office announced Wednesday.

An elementary education major with a 3.50 grade point average, Bonner averaged a double-double in three games for the Catamounts, posting 12.0 points and 13.3 rebounds per game.

The junior forward from Whitesburg, Georgia, opened her holiday weekend with two points and 10 rebounds against Duquesne at the Cal Classic in Berkeley, California, on Friday before scoring 13 points and pulling down 16 rebounds against San Francisco the next day. In Western Carolina’s overtime loss to Campbell on Tuesday, Bonner notched another double-double with 21 points and 14 boards, both game highs.

Bonner leads the SoCon with 12.5 rebounds per game this season and has posted four double-doubles, including three in her last four games.

Also nominated: Mercer’s Amanda Thompson (women’s basketball) and Chattanooga’s Derrick Craine (football).

The General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week recognizes student-athletes that hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 and whose sport is currently in-season. Nominees must have also completed at least one full academic year at their respective institutions.
