Angels add Furman's Smith to 40-man roster

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Los Angeles Angels on Friday added former Furman left-handed pitcher Nate Smith to their 40-man roster in advance of next month’s Major League Baseball Rule 5 Draft.

Smith, an eighth-round selection by the Angels in the 2013 MLB Draft, posted an 8-9 record with a 4.61 ERA for the Angels’ Triple-A Salt Lake Bees in 2016. He is expected to compete for a spot in the Angels’ starting rotation in spring training after missing a September call-up to the major leagues due to tendinitis in his elbow in his final minor-league start.

Unless placed on the 40-man roster, players who signed when they were at least 19 and have played professionally for four years are eligible for the Rule 5 Draft, as are players who signed at 18 and have played for five years.

Smith was 21 years old when he signed with the Angels and has four years of professional baseball experience.
