UNCG Opens 2016-17 with Win Over Brevard
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Head Coach Trina Patterson led the UNCG women’s basketball team to a dominating 77-34 win over Brevard (0-1) in her first game as the Spartans head coach. Bailey Williams led all scorers with 17 points, six rebounds and three assists. Three other Spartans scored in double figures including senior Gena Penick who had a career-best 14 points and seven rebounds. Saturday’s win marked the fewest opponent points allowed in a game in UNCG’s Division 1 era.
The Spartans jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, outscoring the Tornados 22-3 after the first quarter. UNCG held on for a 39-12 lead at halftime.
UNCG held its opponents to 20.8 percent from the field while shooting 43.7 percent and connecting on 9-of-11 free throws. Freshman Alexis Pitchford paced UNCG with 10 points in the half.
The Tornados had their most offensive period in the third quarter, scoring 12 points but UNCG also had an offensive frame scoring a game-high 26 points. Shanese Harris had nine points while Penick added seven of her own in the frame.
UNCG went on to outscore Brevard 12-8 in the final frame. Senior India Timpton had five of her 11 rebounds in the fourth quarter as UNCG cruised to a 43-point victory.
The Spartans out-rebounded Brevard 52-27 and forced 23 Tornado turnovers. UNCG shot 43.5 percent overall in the win while holding BC to 29.4 percent. UNCG shot 26.3 percent from three-point range with Williams shooting 3-for-7. Brevard made just one trey in the contest and was held to 5.3 percent (1-for-19) behind the arc.
UNCG leads the all-time series, 1-0, against Brevard. The Spartans return to action Monday, November 14, when they face UNC Asheville at 5:30 p.m. inside Fleming Gymnasium.
Wofford Women’s Basketball Falls to N.C. State in Season Opener
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Wofford women’s basketball team fell to N.C. State, 80-40, on Saturday evening in Raleigh.
The Wolfpack scored the first nine points of the game and never looked back, locking down the Terrier offense, which was held to 25% shooting for the game.
Sophomore guard Chloe Wanink was the only Terrier in double figures, scoring 10 points. In her first action as a Terrier, freshman guard Cairo Booker scored eight points and dished out a team high three assists.
Despite being held without a field goal in the first quarter, the Terriers strong defense allowed N.C. State just 16 first quarter points. Wofford forced four Wolfpack turnovers in the opening quarter, while only allowing three offensive rebounds.
Wofford’s offense picked up a little in the 2nd quarter, with Booker leading the team with six points, including a three pointer.
Kaila Ealey’s seven points led the Wolfpack, who received points from nine different players in the first half and went into the break with a 37-10 after a tip in at the buzzer.
Kentra Washington, the Terriers’ leading returner in points, rebounds, and assists, picked up two early fouls and only played two minutes in the first half.
Wofford’s most successful quarter was the third, as they put up 21 points on 56.3% shooting. Booker found senior forward Grayson Pinholster twice on post entry passes that led to layups.
While they faced a deficit the whole way, the Terriers remained aggressive, earning 20 free throw attempts, compared to N.C. State’s 17. However, Wofford was only able to convert nine of their 20 attempts from the line.
Aislinn Konig led the Wolfpack with 13 points off the bench on 5-9 shooting. 12 different N.C. State players scored in the contest.
Up next, Wofford will open up its home schedule, facing Erskine this Thursday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m. in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
