GREENSBORO, N.C. – Ashley Muench put down 14 kills and led UNCG to a 3-0 win over Furman (22-25, 15-25, 25-27) on Wednesday night in Fleming Gymnasium. The loss, Furman’s first in SoCon play, drops the Paladins to 7-9 on the year and 3-1 in conference play, while the win moves the Spartans to 8-9 on the year and 3-2 in SoCon play.
Annie Bierman led the Paladins with seven kills and 13 digs, while Jamila Johnson tallied seven kills and 12 digs.
Set one was back and forth until UNCG used a 5-1 run to open up a 21-18 lead over the Paladins. Furman pulled to within one at 21-20, but the Spartans held off the Paladin rally, taking set one 25-22 for a 1-0 match lead.
After UNCG took the second set, 25-15, the Paladins opened up a 7-4 lead in set three. The match again turned into a back-and-forth affair until Furman grabbed set point at 24-23 on a kill by Annie Bierman. The momentum swung back to the Spartans, as they took a 25-24 lead, but following a Furman timeout, the Paladins got a kill by Jamila Johnson to tie the set at 25. UNCG then got back-to-back kills to down the Paladins, 27-25, and take the match, 3-0.
UNCG is back in action on Saturday, taking on ETSU at 2:00 p.m. in Johnson City, Tenn., on SoCon Digital Network.
