SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer midfielder Jordan Duru has been named the Southern Conference men’s soccer player of the week for all competition from Oct. 17-23 after scoring four points in a pair of wins. The selection is made by the league office.
Duru notched a goal and two assists on the week as the Bears picked up a 3-1 win at Wofford and a 5-0 win over VMI to move atop the SoCon standings with 18 points with two regular-season matches to play.
The senior from Powder Springs, Georgia, scored the game-winner against the Terriers on Oct. 18, breaking a 1-1 tie in the 62nd minute. On Saturday, Duru assisted on Mercer’s first and third goals as the Bears jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half.
All three of Duru’s goals this season have been game-winners, tying him for the SoCon lead in that category this season.
The weekly award is the second for Duru, a two-time first-team All-SoCon selection, who also took the distinction on Sept. 8, 2015.
Mercer (11-5-0, 6-2-0 SoCon) hits the road to face Furman (6-6-3, 2-4-2 SoCon) on Tuesday before heading home to host second-place ETSU (9-4-2, 5-1-2) on Saturday in a match that will have major implications on the race for the regular-season title.
Also nominated: Joe Pickering (ETSU) and Dredon Kelly (Wofford).
