SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU outside hitter Briana Allmon has been named the Southern Conference offensive player of the week, while UNCG libero Christina Gregory is the defensive player of the week for matches played Oct. 10-16, the conference office announced Monday.
Allmon claims her second consecutive SoCon offensive player of the week award after leading the Bucs to three straight wins over Chattanooga, Wofford and Western Carolina last week. The senior outside hitter averaged 4.10 kills per set and 0.80 blocks per set, while hitting .271 in last week’s contests. In the Bucs’ sweep over Chattanooga on Wednesday, Allmon tallied a match-high 14 kills along with 2.0 blocks and one service ace. The Flower Mound, Texas, native’s best performance came in ETSU’s sweep at Wofford on Friday as she notched 11 kills on 26 attempts to yield an efficient .385 hitting percentage in addition to 4.0 blocks. Allmon then led the Bucs’ offense to a 3-1 win at Western Carolina on Saturday to propel ETSU to the top of the SoCon standings. She nearly grasped a double-double, recording 16 kills on 46 attempts, eight digs, two service aces and 2.0 blocks to help extend the Bucs’ winning streak to six.
Gregory led the Spartan defense against Samford and Chattanooga this past weekend as she totaled 51 digs in two matches. In UNCG’s four-set win over Samford on Friday, the sophomore libero helped hold the Bulldogs to a hitting percentage of .239 and notched 28 digs, which is the third-most by a SoCon player in a four-set match this season. In the Spartans’ five-set win over Chattanooga on Saturday, Gregory tallied 23 digs, helping hold the Mocs to a hitting percentage of .200. She also added six assists in the match. The Louisville, Ky., native also successfully handled 22 services on the week without recording an error.
