SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford forward Lucas Altman has been named the Southern Conference men’s soccer player of the week for all competition from Oct. 3-9 after tallying a pair of game-winning goals for the Terriers. The selection is made by the league office.
Altman scored three of Wofford’s four goals on the week, starting with his game-winner against ETSU on Oct. 4. The goal, which came in the 56th-minute of a scoreless contest, was the first of Altman’s career.
The freshman from Johnson City, Tennessee, made an even bigger impact Saturday at Furman, scoring twice in the final six minutes to lift Wofford to a wild 3-2 win over the Paladins. After Furman had taken a 2-1 lead in the 82nd minute, Altman knotted the contest at 2 just 3:04 later, putting away a rebounded shot that was saved off the line. A mere 2:03 later, Altman struck again, heading home the game-winner in the 87th minute as the Terriers topped the Paladins in Greenville, South Carolina, for the sixth straight match.
Altman’s efforts on the week helped Wofford to the top of the SoCon standings, where the Terriers (8-3-0, 3-1-0 SoCon) are perched alongside Mercer. Wofford hosts UNCG (6-4-2, 2-2-0) on Tuesday before heading to Altman’s hometown for a match at ETSU (6-4-1, 2-1-1) on Saturday.
Also nominated: Fletcher Ekern (ETSU) and Trenton Whitely (Mercer).
