SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer forward Maddie Clark has been named the Southern Conference women’s soccer player of the week for all competition from Oct. 3-9 after scoring a pair of game-winning goals for the Bears. The selection is made by the league office.
Clark scored both Mercer goals on the week as the Bears picked up a pair of 1-0 wins. In Friday’s win at Furman, the redshirt senior headed home a free kick in the 77th minute to down the league-leading Paladins.
The Peachtree Corners, Georgia, native added another dramatic game-winner Sunday, putting away a breakaway goal in the 92nd minute as the Bears grabbed the overtime win over Wofford to move to .500 in the league and into a tie for fourth in the standings with nine points.
The weekly award is the first of Clark’s career. Clark is fifth among active SoCon players with 19 goals in her three years in the league, while her 10 game-winners are good for third.
Mercer (5-8-1, 3-3-0 SoCon) steps out of conference to host South Carolina State on Wednesday before wrapping up the home portion of its schedule with league matches against VMI (5-9-0, 2-3-0) and UNCG (5-8-2, 2-2-1) on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
Also nominated: Samara Nche (The Citadel), Eleonora Goldoni (ETSU), Melanie Spensiero (UNCG), Jermaine Seoposenwe (Samford) and Mayson Liner (Wofford).
