Bucs win a pair of events in day two of David E. Walker Kickoff Classic

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The ETSU men’s and women’s track & field programs finished their opening meet of the 2016 season strongly Saturday at the David E. Walker Kickoff Classic inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletics Center on David E. Walker Track at Gentry Field. A pair of Bucs picked up wins in their respective events to highlight the day for ETSU.

The first victory for ETSU on the day came in the one mile run, which was won by Haydn Borghetti-Metz with a time of 4:31.51. ETSU also had the runner-up in the event as Carl Oberfeitinger, who tallied a time of 4:32.92.

Like the one mile run, ETSU had the top two runners in the Men’s 3000 meter run. Sophomore Simeon Roberts (Greeneville, Tenn.) paced all runners in the event with a time of 8:30.56, while senior Angus Baldwin (Tumbi Umbi, Austrailia) came in second at 8:38.51.

Meanwhile on the women’s side, the Bucs posted five top 10 finishes on the day with the best coming in the 4x400 relay event. The team of Vicki Franse, Kiana Davis, Nyambi Shoates and Carolyn Hinch posted a time of 4:04.73 to nab sixth place in the event.

In total, the Buccaneers won two events and posted 22 top 10 finishes in 38 events in their first competition of the 2016 indoor season.

The Bucs will return to action Jan. 15-16 when they host the ETSU Track and Field Invitational inside the mini dome. The events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday. 

 

Catamounts Open 2016 at David E. Walker Kickoff Classic

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Western Carolina men’s and women’s track & field teams opened up the 2016 portion of its indoor track & field season at the David E. Walker Kickoff Classic hosted by East Tennessee State University. The two teams combined to pick up 21 top-five finishes with five event victories.

Sophomore Dakota Lamont took top honors in the men’s 400m. He crossed the line in 49.09 while teammate and classmate Henry Kiedy came in second at 49.13.

Lamont and Kiedy teamed up with freshman Dylan Andrade and senior Jermaine Lewis to take the 4x400m event with a time of 3:18.72.

Junior Anisia Starege tied for first in the women’s high jump after clearing 1.71m (5-07.25) while freshman Jamie Brown tied for first on the men’s side with a leap of 2.05m (6-08.75). Senior Christian Carswell and freshman Khali Jackson tied for third in the event with a height of 1.90m (6-02.75).

Senior Jared Johnson was the final individual winner as he took the top spot in the men’s weight throw. His toss of 18.48m (60-07.75) was enough to best the competition. Junior Scott Peretin took fifth after stopping the tape at 16.91m (55-05.75).

Johnson and Peretin also finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the men’s shot put. Johnson’s toss measured out at 15.39m (50-06.00) while Peretin came in at 14.73m (48-04.00).

Keidy picked up another top-five finish in the men’s 200m as he placed second with a time of 22.20. Lamont came in just two spots back in fourth with a time of 22.35.

The team of senior Corina Archie-McMillan, senior Holly Gaines, freshman Dasha Arnaut and senior Tayla Carter finished second in the women’s 4x400m after stopping the clock at 3:54.85.

Junior Hailey Cook placed second in the women’s shot put after stopping the tape at 14.49m (47-06.50). She also came in fifth in the weight throw with a distance of 16.87m (55-04.25).

Brown picked up a second place finish in the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.67m (25-02.00) to go along with his first place finish in the high jump.

Sophomore Alyiah Riley picked up a third place showing in the women’s 60m hurdles after covering the distance in 9.08.

Senior Jamie Bigby finished on the podium in the men’s 800m with a third place finish. He stopped the clock in 1:56.44 just besting teammate freshman Caleb Albrecht who came in fourth after crossing the line in 1:57.12.

Junior JC Cornett also took third in the men’s mile. He finished with a time of 4:34.31.

Junior Jerry Bryant finished with a distance of 13.79m (45-03.00) in the triple jump to take home WCU’s final third place finish.

Carter took fourth in the women’s 60m with a time of 7.68 while Lewis came in fourth on the men’s side with a time of 6.97. Archie-McMillan kept up the strong showing for the sprinters with a fourth place finish in the 400m with a time of 58.15. 

Sophomore Corey Ginley and senior Dustin Triplett tied for fourth in the men’s pole vault as they each cleared 4.70m (15-05.00).

Junior Tiffani Lewis was WCU’s final fourth place finisher as she placed fourth in the women’s long jump with a leap of 5.85m (19-02.50).

Senior Korie Bennett came in fifth for the Catamounts in the women’s pole vault after clearing 3.40m (11-01.75) while freshman Tamilia Wright came in fifth in the women’s triple jump. Wright stopped the tape at 11.18m (36-08.25).

The Catamounts will now begin preparation for the ETSU Invitational, Jan. 15-16.
