UNCG?s Mason named Student-Athlete of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG senior Lucy Mason has been named General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for games played Dec. 23-Jan. 5, the league office announced Wednesday.

Mason, a member of the UNCG women’s basketball team, notched 29 points in a home win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Dec. 28 to become the Spartans’ all-time leading scorer, using a late 3-pointer to surpass the previous standard of 1,585 points accomplished by Angie Polk-Jones 26 years ago. The Stone Mountain, Ga., native put forth a 22-point effort on 7-for-11 shooting and dished out six assists in a 103-56 rout of North Carolina Central three days later.

The veteran guard is tops in the SoCon and fourth in the country with an average of 24.2 points per game. She earned her third Innovative Office Solutions SoCon Player of Week honor of the season on Monday.

Mason walked at December graduation after completing two undergraduate degrees in economics and African American and African Diaspora studies. She finished both degrees with a 3.84 grade point average and is now working on a third degree in political science.
