ROCK HILL, S.C. – After waiting out weather delays from the previous weekend, the Wofford men’s tennis team began their 91st overall and 21st Division I season with a 5-2 loss at Winthrop University Tuesday afternoon.

The Terriers (0-1) took home two singles victories to start the season. Junior Haris Poric and senior Parks Thompson each won their singles matches, with Poric playing at the number one position and Thompson at the number three spot.

“Winthrop was better than us today,” Coach Ray said after the match. “They’re a good team. They won their league last year. But I’m proud of our effort today. Obviously we would have loved to have won, but I’m proud of all the good things we did well and there are some areas that we can work on and definitely get better in.”

Poric defeated Eagles number one Tremayne Mitchell 6-2 in the first set and then 7-6 in the second set, fighting to a 4-0 victory in the tiebreaker. Thompson won against Steven Patrick 6-1, 7-5 in straight sets.

The Eagles (1-1) swept all three doubles matches in their victory. Thompson and senior David Sklar teamed up at the number two position to give Winthrop’s Michael Chen and Roy Teixeira the biggest challenge, taking the match to a tiebreaker that Winthrop eventually won 7-6 (7-0).

Freshmen Alan Poric and Kyle Barr each debuted for the Terriers in singles and Poric also teamed with junior Andrew Graham at the three position to debut in doubles.

Playing from the number two singles spot, Poric dropped the first set against Diego Quiroz 7-6 (2-0) before losing the second set as well 6-4 in his singles match. Poric and Graham lost their doubles match to Quiroz and Josh Ryan 6-4.

Barr dropped both sets in his singles match against Teixeira 6-2 from the number five position.

Sklar and sophomore Parks Schoen also competed for the Terriers in singles, while junior Trevor Gotkowski teamed with Poric at the number one doubles position to begin the year.
