BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's indoor track and field team opened the 2016 season with five top-10 finishes at the Emory Crossplex Invitational held at the Birmingham Crossplex Sunday.

"This was about what I expected for our first meet of the year," Chattanooga head coach Bill Gautier said. "We trained too hard this week, and that's my fault, but the weather hasn't been ideal for training. It may have affected some of the girls in the mile."

Teghan Henderson and Jessica York started the event off in the mile run. Henderson placed sixth with a time of 5:03.72 and York was 10th overall and winning her heat in a time of 5:10.89.

Maddison Melchionna ran a 59.13 in the 400 meter dash and senior Kiaana Howard finished in a time of 1:00.49.

Newcomers Madison Watson, Haley Morris and Lily McKee competed in the 800 meter run for the Mocs. Watson was 10th overall with a time of 2:27.20 with Morris next with a time of 2:30.26.

The Mocs will return to action on February 6 at the Middle Tennessee Invitational in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
