The Citadel downs Campbell in nonconference action at Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. – In its last match of the 2016 Virginia Duals, the Citadel wrestling team defeated SoCon foe Campbell 22-17 to improve to 4-3 this year.

Heading into the 197-pound match, the Bulldogs trailed 17-16, but behind a 6-2 win from senior Marshall Haas and a 7-4 decision from heavyweight Joe Bexley, The Citadel edged Campbell.

The Citadel jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead behind Patrick Kearney, who picked up his second win in as many matches at 125 pounds. Campbell then took its first lead of the dual after Caleb Smith was pinned in 2:35.

The Bulldogs proceeded to reel off three straight victories with Ty Buckiso, Matt Frisch and Aaron Walker all picking up wins to give The Citadel a 12-6 lead heading into the 165 matchup. Walker was the only Bulldog to go 4-0 in the tournament and improved to 15-5 this season.

Campbell picked up another win by fall at 165 to even the score at 12-12 but a huge win by Tim Knipl at 174 pounds over Matthew Olauson returned the lead to The Citadel’s favor. The victory marked the freshman’s first dual win this season.

The Camels won just one more matchup, at 184, before upperclassmen Haas and Bexley took over to seal the win.

The Citadel returns to the mat Jan. 17 for two duals in Edwardsville, Illinois. The Citadel will face SoCon foe SIUE at noon and then Northern Illinois at 1:30 p.m.

Chattanooga finishes third at Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team split a pair of matches to finish third at the Virginia Duals on Saturday. The Mocs dropped the afternoon bout against No. 15 Iowa State 22-13, but bounced back for a big win over Arizona State by the same score in the nightcap.

UTC (8-3) took four matches off of the Cyclones and had a few other close calls. Junior Sean Mappes led the way with a 4-3 decision over No. 18 Lelund Weatherspoon at 174. Juniors Michael Pongracz (141) and Jared Johnson (285) and freshman Kamaal Shakur (157) also scored wins. Pongracz got a bonus point with a major decision at 141.

UTC had a chance against the Cyclones. Junior Scottie Boykin lost in overtime at 197 and freshman Dominic Lampe gave up an uncharacteristic pin at 165.

The loss set up the third-place match against the Sun Devils. Chattanooga jumped out to a 12-0 lead after three matches, thanks to some outstanding performances at the top of the lineup.

Freshman Alonzo Allen opened with a 22-5 tech fall against Ares Carpio. Sophomore Cody Hill followed with an 11-7 decision at 133, while Pongo added a major at 141.

Arizona State took the next two to close the gap to 12-7. The Mocs were hit with a penalty point at 157, but Lampe picked up the slack with a win at 165. Sophomore Barrett Walthall stepped in for a win at 174 and junior McCoy Newberg clinched the team win with a major decision at 184. 

UTC coach Heath Eslinger turned the last two matches over to his bench, giving junior D.J. Franklin-Smith and freshman Connor Tolley a shot at 197 and heavyweight.

Iowa State went on to win the tournament with a 16-14 upset over No. 3 Virginia Tech. UTC is back in action on Friday, Jan. 15, when it hosts Gardner-Webb at 6 p.m. in Maclellan Gym.

Davidson drops three at Pitt Duals

PITTSBURGH – Five Davidson wrestlers registered a win as the Wildcats competed at the 2016 Pitt Duals at the Fitzgerald Field House on Saturday.

Davidson fell to Franklin & Marshall, 32-6. The Wildcats suffered a 43-3 setback against No. 20 Pitt.  In the final match of the day, Davidson dropped a 41-10 decision to Hofstra.

Nathaniel Powers put Davidson on the board against Franklin & Marshall. The senior earned a hard-fought, 3-2 battle over Josh Young at 174 pounds. At 197, Michael Moore posted a decision over Jack Argast, 4-2.

Against No. 20 Pitt, freshman Tony Palumbo posted a decision at 157 pounds. Palumbo earned a sudden-victory decision over Nathan Russell.

Dustin Runzo and Aidan Conroy picked up a wins against Hofstra. Runzo earned an 8-0 major decision over Marcus Begay. Conroy pinned his opponent at 149 pounds.

The Wildcats return to action Jan. 17 for their home opener against Anderson.
