Longwood 3, VMI 0

LEXINGTON, Va. – Darien Dunham made 12 saves, but the Longwood Lancers tallied three first-half goals and went on to a 3-0 win over the VMI Keydets in nonconference women's soccer action Tuesday afternoon at Patchin Field.

Longwood (3-3) jumped on top in the sixth minute, when a ball played deep into VMI's defensive zone was mishandled by a Keydet defender. Amanda Spencer jumped on the loose ball and ran into a blast from 15 yards out, a shot that beat Dunham top right to put the Lancers ahead to stay. Amber Hodges and Kathryn Miller added goals later in the period to account for the remainder of the Lancer scoring.

After Spencer's early goal, Dunham and the Keydets (1-4) were able to keep the visitors off the board until the 31st minute, when Hodges converted from 12 yards out to double the Lancer lead.

That margin then grew to 3-0 in the 35th minute, when, off multiple deflections, Miller settled a ball 15 yards out and put a shot into the back of the net to account for the final margin.

The Keydets had a quality chance to get on the board early in the second half, but a Keniya Lee 1 vs. 1 try against Longwood keeper Hailey Machen was stopped on a kick save.

VMI returns to action Friday for a neutral-site match, as the Keydets open a round-robin tournament in Boiling Springs, N.C. Action against the UNC Asheville Bulldogs gets underway at 4 p.m.
