No. 13 Clemson 5, Wofford 1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Three Clemson goals in the first half and another two in the second led to a 5-1 Wofford women’s soccer defeat at the hands of the 13th-ranked Tigers on Monday night at Snyder Field.

Down 2-0 in the 32nd minute, midfielder Mary Beth Bleekrode gave the Terriers (0-2-2) a jolt of life with her first goal of the season. A foul in front of the box gave the Terriers a free kick, which midfielder Emily Gaid lightly passed right to Bleekrode.

Bleekrode then took a dribble to her right and smashed the ball past a line of Tiger defenders and keeper Kailen Sheridan into the back left corner. The goal was the ninth of her career, and it was the first assist of the season for Gaid.

Tiger forward Alana Hockenhull kicked in the first Clemson goal in the 20th minute. Hockenhull knocked the ball in off a rebounded shot attempt by midfielder Abby Jones.

Nine minutes later, forward Salma Anastasio scored her first of two goals in the match. Defender Claire Wagner gave Anastasio a long pass over the middle of the field, and the forward touched the ball to spin it over Terrier keeper Alex Carroll and into the net.

In the waning minutes of the half, Clemson midfielder Katie Sprouse bicycled in a goal off a Samantha Staab throw-in to give the Tigers a 3-1 halftime advantage.

Anastasio and forward Miranda Weslake chipped in the last two goals for Clemson in the 62nd and 84th minutes, respectively. Midfielder Catrina Atanda recorded an assist on Anastasio’s goal, while Staab notched her second assist of the game on Weslake’s score.

Terrier goalkeeper Alex Carroll set a new career-high in the match with 11 saves in the losing effort. Tiger goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan was credited with the victory.

The Terriers have over a week off before next taking the field. They travel to Florence, S.C., Sept. 15 to take on Francis Marion University at 7 p.m.
