ETSU 1, Radford 1 (2OT)
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – ETSU played to a 1-1 tie Saturday night at Radford University. The Bucs scored first for the third straight game with a goal by Luke Parker in the 57th minute, but ETSU could not find the net again after the Highlanders tied the game.
After a scoreless first half, Parker netted his first collegiate goal eight minutes into the second half. Joao Ramalho picked up the assist.
However, Radford retaliated just over a minute and a half later to tie the game as Finn Tiedemann was able to score his second goal of the season in the right side of the net.
Heading into the first overtime, Radford took several shots early but with no luck. Parker found himself with the best chance for the Bucs with a shot in front of the goal, but a Highlander defender blocked the shot.
ETSU and RU couldn’t find the net in the first overtime, and the second overtime was not any different.
The Bucs will continue on the road as they face Appalachian State (0-1) on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
High Point 1, VMI 0
HIGH POINT, N.C. – With the game appearing to be heading to overtime, High Point’s Ben Hietala put in a goal with just six minutes remaining to lift the Panthers to a 1-0 victory over the VMI men’s soccer team Saturday night.
High Point’s Erien Campbell penetrated the Keydet back line and spotted Hietala to his left. Hietala took the pass and shot it into the lower right corner behind a diving VMI keeper Alex Guerra to give HPU the nonconference win.
With the win, High Point improves to 1-1-1 on the year while the Keydets drop to 0-2 in a game that was delayed for an hour due to nearby lightning.
Guerra earned nine saves for the match, while HPU’s Kody Palmer earned one save facing four VMI shot attempts.
The Keydets face a quick turnaround as they travel to Spartanburg, South Carolina, for a Tuesday-night matchup with USC Upstate at 6 p.m.
