SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for all games played
Sept. 26. Chattanooga’s Jacob Huesman was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while his teammate Keionta Davis earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. Furman’s Brian Ross was named the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jacob Huesman, Chattanooga, Sr., QB, Chattanooga, Tenn.
Chattanooga quarterback Jacob Huesman rushed for a touchdown and threw another as the Mocs earned a 21-0 win at Presbyterian on Saturday night. Huesman averaged 5.7 yards per carry as he rushed 23 times for 132 yards and a score. He was efficient in the pocket, completing 11-of-16 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. With his 132 yards on the ground, Huesman moved into third place on UTC’s all-time rushing list with 3,183 career yards. The senior threw his 58th career touchdown pass, moving into sole possession of fourth place on the league’s all-time list.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Keionta Davis, Chattanooga, Jr., DL, Chattanooga, Tenn.
Keionta Davis anchored a strong performance from the UTC defense Saturday. Davis tallied a career-high five tackles, including a personal-best three sacks, which resulted in minus-13 yards. The junior was credited with three pass break-ups, a quarterback hurry and forced a fumble in the win. The Mocs earned the shutout and allowed just 117 yards of total offense, including just 8 yards of offense in the second half.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Brian Ross, Furman, Jr., DE, Century, Fla.
Junior Brian Ross made a key play in special teams to help Furman rally from down 14-0 to claim a 24-21 win over VMI on Saturday afternoon. With the Keydets holding a 14-7 halftime lead, Ross and the Paladins’ defense forced a three-and-out to start the second half. On fourth down, Ross blocked the VMI punt, scooped the ball and scored from 5 yards out for a touchdown to tie the score. It was the first blocked punt returned for a touchdown by a Paladin since 2008.
