Mercer downs The Citadel 3-0 Saturday

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University women's soccer team opened league action with a dominating 3-0 win over The Citadel on Saturday afternoon at Bear Field.

Maddie Clark scored a pair of goals for Mercer, one in the 31st minute and one in the 46th, to register the game-winning goal as well as provide the Bears with some breathing room early in the second half.

After a slow start, Clark put the Bears on the board in the 31st minute when she scored off a cross from Katelyn Dimopoulos. Mercer added a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the second half to secure the victory.

Katelyn Dimopoulos scored off a penalty kick in the 50th minute to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.

Mercer led in shots, 30-3, as well as shots on goal, 12-3. Mercer also led in corner kicks, 10-2.

Cristina Mursuli made the lone save of the night for the Bears, as the Mercer defense registered its third shutout of the season.

Mercer improved to 4-4-2 (1-0 SoCon) on the season, while The Citadel fell to 1-10 (0-1 SoCon).

Mercer will continue SoCon play on Friday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Chattanooga at Bear Field. The Citadel is back in action Friday when it hosts Samford at 5:30 p.m.
