Guillorel takes third for Samford at Commodore Classic
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Samford University cross country program competed at the Commodore Classic on Saturday. The meet was hosted by Vanderbilt University at Percy Warner Park.
The program was given the task to improve from its first competition nearly two weeks ago and the team's responded according to Head Coach Kevin Ondrasek.
Sophomore Arsène Guillorel turned in an outstanding outing as he led all Bulldogs with a third place overall finish in the men's 8k with a time of 24:43.80. Guillorel was only bested by a pair of Louisville Cardinals who hold All-American honors.
Not far behind Guillorel was senior Adam Jones who helped Samford to an overall 7th place finish in the team standings. Jones bettered his time from 2014 by more than half a minute as last year he ran a 25:42.16 but hustled to turn in a time of 25:05.3 which was good for an 11th place finish.
On the women's side the Bulldogs placed 14th overall out of 21 teams in the standings after the 5k event.
Sophomore Karisa Nelson paced Samford with a 68th place time of 18:18.90 and was trailed by fellow sophomore Emma Garner who crossed the finish line with a time of 18:24.2.
The Bulldogs next meet takes place on Sept. 25th, at the Charlotte Invitational in Charlotte, N.C.
Catamount men win UNC Asheville Invitational; women finish second
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Western Carolina men’s and women’s cross country teams were in action Saturday morning at the UNC Asheville Invitational. The men took the team championship in an eight team field while the women finished second. The Catamounts also won both individual titles with freshman Liam Brooks winning the men’s 8K race and freshman Kaitlyn Lingard winning the women’s 5K title.
The men placed eight runners in the top 20, while the women had six in the top 20.
The men finished ahead of UNCA, North Carolina A&T, Wofford and Presbyterian, while the women topped Wofford, North Carolina A&T and Presbyterian but fell to UNCA.
Brooks led the men after finishing first with a time of 25:25.49. Junior JC Cornett came across next for the Catamounts in fifth after crossing the line in 25:58.07.
The women’s top-two finishers were Lingard who won the race with a time of 18:18.43 while sophomore Madison Goode came across next in sixth after stopping the clock at 19:07.78.
Freshman Joel Freeman came across third for the men and 11th overall with a time of 26:29.39.
The Catamounts will take a week off before returning to action on Oct. 3 at the Upstate Invitational hosted by USC Upstate.
Wofford cross country competes at UNC Asheville Invitational
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Wofford College men’s and women’s cross country teams ran at the UNC Asheville Invitational on Saturday morning held on the campus of the Asheville Christian Academy. The women’s team finished third overall, while the men took fourth place.
The men’s 8K competition started things off, and Alex Michaels led the Terriers with a time of 26:37.44 to place 13th overall. Cisco Ferre finished next in 14th place at 26:42.65. Joe Harbacevich was 21st overall with a time of 27:02.83.Cristian Widenhouse, Ryan Doyle, Jonathan Rice, Dane Szalwinski, Ben Boatwright, Jurdan Mossburg, Ben Hensley, Will Stutts, David Grant and K.J. Atwood also competed for the Terriers.
The women’s 5K race followed and Marella Angello finished ninth overall with a time of 19:19.16. Anya Bunao was 13th overall at 19:28.69, while Rebeka Fadgyas was 18th at 19:34.29. Alex Forster finished 21st and crossed the line in 19:44.30. Also running for the Terriers were Jamie Barnett, Sarah Spiro, Halee Rogers, Chandler Washburn, Alexandra Christopoulos, Breck Peterson, Morgan Schweers, Rebeka Parent, LeAndrea Combo, and Mollie Golicher.
Western Carolina won the men’s race with 45 points. In the women’s competition, UNC Asheville took first place with a total of 23 points.
Both the men’s and women’s teams will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 3 at the USC Upstate Invitational held at Milliken Park.
