Chattanooga 2, UAB 1 (2OT)
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Chattanooga sophomore Emily Moseley flicked home a Samantha Hogan pass with one second left in double overtime to lift the Mocs to a 2-1 win over UAB at Finley Stadium on Friday night.
With the clock countdown booming out over the loudspeaker, Hogan shot a pass into the box from the right side. It deflected back out and she sent it back in for another chance and Moseley picked up the ball and flicked it in for the game-winner as time ran out.
UAB (1-6) scored first, taking a 1-0 lead from a goal by Caroline Kerher in the 21st minute. Rachel Green sent a long pass that Kerher picked up just inside the 18-yard box and sent past UTC keeper Katie Emig.
Late in the game, Hogan scored the game-tying goal. Sophomore McKenzie Gregg lofted a free kick from the far side to the near side. Hogan picked it up and her shot rang off the far post and past UAB’s keeper at the 82:07 mark of the game.
The Mocs (2-6) hit the road Sunday to take on Tennessee Tech to close out the nonconference slate. The game will kick off at 2 p.m. Eastern Time.
Furman 1, North Florida 0
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior Maggie Grisell saved a penalty kick in the 21st minute and fellow senior Stephanie DeVita became the Paladins’ all-time leading goal-scorer when she netted the eventual match-winning goal in the 48th minute as Furman toppled North Florida, 1-0, in nonconference women’s soccer action on Friday night at Hodges Stadium.
The victory was the fifth straight for the Paladins, who improved to 7-2-0 on the season. North Florida slipped to 1-7-0.
With the match scoreless after 45 minutes, Furman went on the attack to open the second half and got its reward quickly. After Emily Graves’ shot was saved in the opening minute of the period and Furman earned a corner kick moments later, DeVita put the Paladins in front at 47:35. Graves played a pass to DeVita on the left side of the box and the Simpsonville, S.C., native lined a 16-yard shot across the face of goal and into the upper right-hand corner.
The goal was DeVita’s eighth of the season and school record-setting 58th of her career. She moved past former Paladin great Emily Turgeon to the top of Furman’s career goals ledger and moved within one goal of tying former Georgia Southern standout Tara Chiasson as the Southern Conference’s all-time leading goal scorer.
UNF came out on the attack, earning a pair of corner kicks and ripping a shot off of the cross bar in the first 15 minutes of the match. In the 21st minute, an Osprey forward and Furman defender got tangled up in the box and UNF was awarded a penalty kick. Grisell dove to deny Lanie Keating on a low shot and keep the match scoreless.
Grisell finished with two saves to earn the victory in goal and improve to 6-0-0 on the season. Ford and Victoria Ekeli each stopped one shot for North Florida.
The Paladins face a quick turnaround once again as they visit the Jacksonville Dolphins on Sunday afternoon in their nonconference finale.
VMI 1, Presbyterian 0 (OT)
LEXINGTON, Va. – Olivia Cotton scored in the eighth minute of overtime, sending the VMI Keydets past the Presbyterian College Blue Hose, 1-0, in nonconference women's soccer action Friday at Patchin Field.
After a steal in the Presbyterian zone, a long ball behind the PC defense found Blake Cashin on the left edge of the box. Cashin played the ball toward the middle to Cotton, who finished with a quick touch past goalkeeper Sydney Fontenot to set off the celebration.
VMI (3-5) finished the game with a 10-8 edge in shots and controlled much of the tempo for the final 65-plus minutes, as evidenced by the Keydets notching nine of the final 10 corner kicks. Overall, VMI held a 10-6 edge in that statistic. Darien Dunham posted five saves to three for Fontenot.
The OT win was VMI's first since August 19, 2011, that season's opener against Howard.
The game was the second in a weekend four-team round-robin tournament hosted by VMI, following Francis Marion's 9-1 win over Hampton earlier in the day.
VMI returns to action, and closes out the weekend's proceedings, by taking on Francis Marion on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Mercer 1, Middle Tennessee 0
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University women's soccer team used an early goal to take a 1-0 advantage and held on to the lead to defeat Middle Tennessee on Friday night at Bear Field.
The Bears scored just 1:38 into the game after Haley McDuffee threw the ball in and Haleigh Svede flicked it on to Katelyn Dimopoulos, who found the left side of the goal from less than 5 yards out.
Maggie Cropp made five saves while recording her third shutout of the year. She now has 40 saves on the season and has allowed just three goals for a .930 save percentage and a 0.37 goals-against average.
Dimopoulos' goal was the first of the season and fourth of her career.
Mercer will open Southern Conference play against The Citadel on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 4 p.m. at Bear Field in Macon. The game will be the first in a doubleheader, as the men's team will play at 7 p.m.
Davidson 2, Wofford 1 (2OT)
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women’s soccer team gave up a last-second goal in the second overtime period as the Davidson Wildcats defeated the Terriers 2-1 Friday night at Snyder Field.
Davidson midfielder Vicky Bruce scored the game-winning goal for the Wildcats with one second left on the game clock. Bruce pushed a hard grounder past Terrier goalkeeper Alex Carroll from the left side of the box into the back right corner of the net for the score, her second of the season.
Wofford put the first point on the scoreboard in the 10th minute, as midfielder Hannah Washko fed a pass to fellow midfielder Hayley Younginer at the top of the box. Younginer fired a shot that sailed over Wildcat goalkeeper Kendall Thomas and into the net for her second goal of the season. It was Washko’s first assist of the season, as well.
With seven seconds left in regulation, a free ball allowed defender Dani Johnson to slide past the Terrier defense with only the keeper to beat. Johnson touched the ball past Carroll and tied up the match at 1-1 with her second goal of the season.
Thomas earned the victory for the Wildcats, playing all 110 minutes in net and recording three saves. Carroll took the loss for the Terriers, also playing all 110 minutes in net with five saves.
The Terriers (1-3-2) take a week off before hitting the road for their next match against Chattanooga to open conference play Sept. 25. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
Campbell 2, ETSU 1
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – In its final nonconference contest of the season, ETSU fell on the road to Campbell, 2-1 on Friday night. Junior Simona Koren kept up her stellar play recording a goal in her third straight game.
Campbell was able to break through in the 30th minute when assists from Shannon Wratchford and Kine Thorsvik set up redshirt senior Ashley Clark for her seventh goal of the season, giving Campbell the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Junior goalkeeper Jasmine Elliott made four saves in the first half, giving her 141 on her career, passing Megan Masch for most saves in school history.
In the second half, junior Molly Collinson had a chance to tie the game in the 51st minute. A chip over the Campbell defense found Collinson one-on-one with the goalkeeper but Collinson wasn’t able to get enough on the shot as the ball went straight into the goalie’s chest.
Campbell responded quickly to the ETSU attack, widening its lead in the 57th minute after forward Shannon Wratchford netted her first goal of the season with the assist from forward Payton Ornsby.
A late rally saw ETSU get on the board with 20 seconds remaining as Koren chipped a ball over the Campbell goalkeeper for her third goal of the season. Freshman Delaney Griffin earned the assist.
It will be a week before the Bucs are back in action as they travel to Lexington, Va., for their Southern Conference opener against VMI on Friday, Sept. 25, at 4 p.m. ETSU continues the weekend on the road with UNCG on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m.
Winthrop 3, The Citadel 0
ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Citadel women’s soccer team fell to Winthrop 3-0 on Friday night.
The Eagles (3-3-1) outshot The Citadel 22-9 in the game and were led by JoJo Taylor, who tallied five shots. Winthrop took a 1-0 lead into the half and then Megan David tallied two goals for Winthrop in the second half.
Emilie Valenciano and Kim Maldonado led the Bulldogs with two shots apiece. Mady Riegel, Ilana Green and Sam Waarum played the full 90 minutes on Friday. The Citadel had seven corner kicks to Winthrop’s four.
Kim Mora got the start in goal for the Bulldogs (1-8) and played the entirety of the contest, allowing three goals and notching three saves.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Sunday when they take on crosstown rival College of Charleston at 1 p.m. at Patriots Point.
