Tuesday's women's soccer roundup

Wofford 1, Francis Marion 0

FLORENCE, S.C. – Wofford picked up its first win of the 2015 season Tuesday night, defeating the Francis Marion Patriots on the road 1-0 at Hartzler Field.

Senior midfielder Lucy Etro scored for the Terriers in the 30th minute, which proved the difference in the match. Sophomore midfielder Brooke Leftwich crossed the ball from the right side to Etro in the box. From 7 yards out, Etro nailed home the goal past Patriot keeper Taylor O'Berry.

The goal was Etro's first of her career, and it was also Leftwich's first career assist.

The other storyline from the match was a strong performance from the Terriers' defense. Wofford only allowed one Patriot shot attempt in the match, a high shot from senior forward Janise Finney in the 37th minute. Wofford also did not allow a corner kick opportunity for the Patriots in the match.

Freshman goalkeeper Alex King was credited with the victory in her collegiate debut. She started the match in net and played the first half before redshirt freshman Alex Carroll replaced her.

O'Berry suffered the loss in net for the Patriots despite racking up 12 saves in the match.

Wofford improves to 3-1 all-time against Francis Marion.

The Terriers (1-2-2) take the field again Friday as the team hosts Davidson at Snyder Field. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

ETSU 2, Winthrop 1

WINTHROP, S.C. – In the 87th minute, junior forward Simona Koren netted the game-winning goal to give ETSU women’s soccer a 2-1 victory over Winthrop on Tuesday night.

After Winthrop tied the game, freshman Emily McKerlie placed a perfect corner kick that junior Molly Collinson was able head straight into the air, setting up Koren, who rocketed the ball into the back of the net, earning the game-winner and giving ETSU the 2-1 victory. It’s the second straight game Koren has scored a goal.

In the first half, the Eagles kept the Bucs off the board until the 18th minute, when Collinson with the assist from freshman Irina Brutsch gave ETSU a 1-0 lead. Collinson leads the Blue & Gold in goals (four) and points (11) so far this season.

ETSU was able to dominate the Eagles in the first half, outshooting Winthrop 4-3 with all four shots being on goal. The Bucs dominated in corner kicks with a 6-0 edge over the Eagles.

The Blue & Gold held a 1-0 lead in the second half all the way until the 86th minute, when defender Taylor Coleman raced down the right side of the field and crossed it over to forward Samantha Prytulak, who put it in the back of the net to tie the game up.

ETSU outshot the Eagles 11-6 including 7-3 in the second half. Collinson led the way for the Bucs with four shots, two being on goal, and an assist. Junior goalkeeper Jasmine Elliott made two saves on the night and is now four saves away from becoming ETSU’s career leader in saves.

So far during the 2015 campaign the Bucs are 3-0 on the road with two coming against Big South conference opponents. The Bucs stopped their two-game losing streak and moved to an overall record of 5-3. ETSU will have another road test against the Big South on Friday, Sept. 18, when they take on Campbell at 5 p.m. in Buies Creek, N.C.
