Samford?s Kelley named SoCon Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford forward Malcanisha Kelley has been named the Southern Conference women’s soccer player of the week for all competition from Aug. 24-30 after leading the Bulldogs to wins over Memphis and Wake Forest. The selection is made by the league office.

Kelley scored eight points in the two contests, scoring two goals and adding two assists in Samford’s 5-1 romp over Memphis on Friday before adding a goal in the Bulldogs’ 2-1 win over Wake Forest on Sunday. The win over the Demon Deacons was Samford’s second-ever over an ACC program and first since 2005, while the victory over the Tigers was the Bulldogs’ first since 2007.

Kelley, from Childersburg, Ala., leads the SoCon with six goals and 14 points on the young season. Just four games into her junior campaign, she is already more than halfway to Samford’s single-season goals record of 11. With 21 career goals and 52 career points, Kelley sits seventh and sixth in school history in those categories, respectively.

The weekly award is the second of Kelley’s career, as she was also honored on Nov. 1, 2013.

Samford (3-1) is back in action Friday, Sept. 4, when it faces No. 16 Auburn in Auburn, Ala., at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

Also nominated: Sarah Zadrazil (ETSU), Jamilah Tejan (Mercer), Diarra Simmons (UNCG), Sydnie Bligh (VMI), Kimberly Sullivan (Western Carolina) and Alex Carroll (Wofford).
