Wofford 3, Winthrop 0
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Matthew Aurednik scored twice in the second half as Wofford picked up a 3-0 win over Winthrop on Sunday.
Connor Davis scored what would prove to be the game-winner in the 21st minute, nodding home a Will Puckett free kick.
Aurednik added two insurance goals in the second frame, converting a through ball from Nestor Jaramillo in the 65th minute before putting the game away by beating Eagle keeper Fabian Broich one-on-one in the 87th minute.
Wofford keeper Garrett Closs made 10 saves in picking up the shutout.
The Terriers (2-0) return to action on Friday, Sept. 4, when they face former Southern Conference foe Davidson in Davidson, N.C., at 7 p.m.
Furman 1, Seton Hall 1
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Furman rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit on Lewis Hawke’s first goal of the season as the Paladins claimed a 1-1 draw versus Seton Hall at the Nike/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic on Sunday. Heavy rains at the end of regulation left the field unplayable for overtime and shortened the match to 90 minutes.
The draw moved the Paladins to 0-1-1, while Seton Hall also improved to 0-1-1.
After Furman built a 5-1 edge in shots and created most of the early opportunities, Seton Hall grabbed the 1-0 advantage just 14 seconds before the halftime break. Eric Lagg collected the ball in the box and punched a shot past Sven Lissek for the Pirate goal.
Furman knotted the match at 1-1 less than two minutes after the restart. Bobby Edet crossed into the box and Hawke flicked a header past Seton Hall goalkeeper Julian Spindler at the 46:48 mark.
Furman returns home next weekend when it hosts Northern Illinois and Winthrop in the Diadora/Spinx Gray Griffin Memorial Tournament at Stone Stadium.
No. 8 Clemson 4, Mercer 1
CLEMSON, S.C. – The Mercer University men's soccer team gave up three second-half goals as the Bears lost 4-1 to the eighth-ranked Clemson Tigers on Sunday.
After a Clemson goal in the 25th minute, a header from Drew Schall knotted the score in the 40th minute. The Bears held on as the Tigers scored again in the 60th minute but after a pair of Clemson goals that occurred over the span of 33 seconds with just over 10 minutes left to play, Mercer was unable to even the score for a second time.
Goalkeeper Jeremy Booth made a career-high eight saves in his second complete game of the season.
Schall's goal was the first of his career for the senior. Trenton Whitely's assist on Schall's goal was his first of the season and the fourth of his career.
Mercer falls to 0-2 for the season, while Clemson moves to 2-0.
Mercer will face in-state foe Georgia State on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. at the GSU Soccer Complex in Atlanta, Ga.
