CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Three Southern Conference baseball student-athletes have been named Perfect Game Summer Collegiate All-Americans, the organization announced Wednesday morning. VMI pitchers Taylor Edens and Jack Gomersall and Mercer outfielder Kyle Lewis were honored.

Edens was a first-team selection, while and Lewis was a second-team pick and Gomersall was a third-team choice.

VMI’s Edens, who was chosen as a starting pitcher, went 9-1 with a 2.06 ERA pitching for the Peninsula Pilots of the Coastal Plain League. He made six starts among his 11 outings and held opponents to a .236 batting average.

Mercer’s Lewis led the Orleans Firebirds to the best record in the Cape Cod League (31-12-1) and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. The 6-foot-4 outfielder was named to the league’s All-Star game after hitting .300 and ranking among the league leaders with seven home runs and 24 RBIs.

The Snellville, Ga., native burst onto the scene last spring in his first campaign as a full-time starter at Mercer, putting together one of the best individual seasons in recent memory. The 2015 Southern Conference Player of the Year fell just shy of the league’s triple crown in 2015, topping the conference in batting average (.367) and home runs (17) while finishing fifth in RBIs (56).

The Keydets’ Gomersall allowed just two earned runs in 41 innings as a starter for the Vienna Riverdogs of the Cal Ripken League. That was good for an 0.43 ERA that led to a record of 6-1.
