SPARTANBURG, S.C. –The Chattanooga men’s track and field team finished tops in the nation in cumulative GPA among Division I men’s squads for the second consecutive year, and the Mocs’ women’s team tallied the second-best GPA among DI women’s teams, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Friday. Six other Southern Conference schools joined Chattanooga in earning All-Academic status. ETSU, Furman and Wofford garnered the distinction for both their men’s and women’s teams, while the women’s teams for Mercer, Samford and Western Carolina also earned All-Academic recognition.
The Chattanooga men bested 122 other All-Academic teams with a 3.59 GPA and the Mocs’ women’s squad posted a 3.73 GPA , edging 222 other teams and putting them right on the heels of Lipscomb (3.74).
A team had to earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher to be recognized as All-Academic.
Additionally, 13 Southern Conference student-athletes hailing from The Citadel, Furman, Samford and Western Carolina were named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team. A total of 838 women and 529 men earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, student-athletes must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and met one of the two athletic standards. For the indoor season, student-athletes must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org. For the outdoor season, student-athletes must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
