PHILADELPHIA – The Southern Conference placed seven football players on the 2015 STATS FCS Preseason All-America Team announced Thursday (July 9). The three teams selected totaled 100 student-athletes representing 63 different schools from 13 conferences.
Chattanooga offensive lineman Corey Levin was named to the first team, while his quarterback Jacob Huesman earned second team honors. Mercer’s Chandler Curtis and Samford’s James Bradberry were also named to the second team.
Furman placed a pair on the third team with tight end Duncan Fletcher and linebacker Cory Magwood being selected. UTC defensive back Lucas Webb was also named to the third team.
Levin, the 2014 Jacob’s Blocking Award recipient as the top offensive lineman in the Southern Conference, was a first team selection. Huesman made the second team as a quarterback while Webb was a third team pick as a defensive back.
Huesman is a two-time SoCon Offensive Player of the Year and finished 11th in the voting for the Walter Payton Award last season. He accounted for 37 touchdowns in 2014, passing for 23 and rushing for 14. He also led the nation with a 68.5 completion percentage and was fourth in the FCS with a 156.2 pass efficiency rating.
Mercer’s Curtis is coming off a memorable freshman campaign that saw him garner FCS All-America honors from three publications. The Calhoun, Ga., native racked up 1,430 all-purpose yards and 10 total touchdowns during his freshman season, leading the SoCon with 119.2 all-purpose yards per game. He finished the year as the Bears' leading receiver, hauling in 28 receptions for 564 yards and five touchdowns with an average of 20.1 yards per catch.
In 2014, Bradberry finished second on the team with two interceptions. He also had four pass break-ups, and he was responsible for 25 tackles, including 22 solo stops. At the conclusion of last season, Bradberry was named second team All-SoCon by the league’s coaches.
As a sophomore in 2013, Bradberry had 26 tackles, two interceptions and 10 pass break-ups. The Pleasant Grove, Ala., native was also named second team All-SoCon by the coaches following the 2013 season.
Fletcher, a rising junior, caught 36 passes for 442 yards and two touchdowns a year ago en route to earning consensus second team All-SoCon honors. The 6-foot-4, 232-pound Columbus, Ga., product made the switch to tight end last year after seeing action as a quarterback in 2013.
Magwood, a consensus first-team All-SoCon pick in 2014, is coming off a junior campaign that saw him pace the league with 123 tackles. He is a 6-foot-2, 228-pound rising senior from Varnville, S.C.
Webb was one of the top freshmen in the country last season, finishing 16th in the voting for the Jerry Rice Award. He tied for the SoCon lead and the UTC freshman mark with six interceptions. He was also a first team All-SoCon selection by the league’s media.
