VMI's Winn named finalist for Johnny Bench Award

WICHITA, Kan. – Former VMI catcher Matt Winn has been named one of three finalists for this year’s Johnny Bench Award presented by Baseballsavings.com, according to information released by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission on Tuesday afternoon. Winn joins Kade Scivicque of LSU and Garrett Stubbs of the University of Southern California as the final three in contention for the yearly honor, given to the top catcher in Division I.

“I am beyond thrilled with this recognition,” stated Winn. “I just want to thank my coaches and everyone along the way that helped me get to this point.”

Winn, who graduated in May, hit .304 with 26 extra-base hits, including 14 home runs, in his final collegiate season. The home-run total tied for the third-most in Keydet history, and his last was the biggest of all, a game-winner in VMI’s conference tournament victory over UNCG. Winn also ranked in the top 20 in Division I in caught stealing percentage for the majority of the season, finishing at 39.3 percent. He was selected first-team All-Southern Conference, as well.

A final vote among the national committee will take place during the College World Series. Winn, Scivicque and Stubbs will all be flown to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 18th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 25, 2015.
