Three SoCon Softball Players Named Academic All-District

Taylor Sigmon Named Capital One First Team Academic All-District III

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball junior first baseman and pitcher Taylor Sigmon was named to the 2015 Capital One Academic All-District III First Team for the second straight year. She was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). As a first team selection, Sigmon now advances to the Capital One All-Academic Team ballot.

The Catawba, N.C native becomes the first Western Carolina softball player to earn Academic All-District III honors in back-to-back seasons. She is the third consecutive Catamount softball player to be named to the academic all-district team. In 2013, Haley Pace earned the honor becoming the first in school history to be named to the all-district team.

Sigmon has a 3.97 GPA in Communication Science Disorders. She was named to the 2013-14 Southern Conference Honor Roll and named the General Shale Student-Athlete of the Week this season.

Sigmon tied her own school record with six saves this season with a 2.16 ERA with a 3-4 record and 83 strikeouts. At the plate, Sigmon has a .234 batting average with 36 hits, five doubles, six homeruns, 25 RBI and 20 runs.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form. In baseball, pitchers must have at least 10.0 innings pitched. Athletes who have not participated in at least 50 percent of their team's contests are not eligible.

There are eight districts nationally divided into both a college and university division with each section selecting both a first and second team. All nominations are submitted by the college or university sports information / media relations staff.

 

Nicole Thomas Named Capital One Academic All-District III

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG softball junior Nicole Thomas has been selected to the Capital One Academic All-District III first team for the second-straight season, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced on Thursday.

Thomas, a junior this past season, has a 3.58 GPA in Kinesiology at UNCG. Nicole Thomas will now be entered with all the other first team selections for a chance to be named to the Academic All-America Team.

The Irvine, Calif. native was named first team All-Conference as a utility player this past week after having a solid junior season. She is second on the team with a .399 average off 57 hits, 31 runs scored, 10 home runs and 44 RBI. N. Thomas also is 8-8 as a pitcher with 27 appearances and has thrown 96.2 innings.

Shiver Named Academic All-District IV

MACON, Ga. – Mercer University junior Natalie Shiver was named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.

Shiver has started 49 of Mercer's games this season, recording a .353 batting average and is second on the team with 10 home runs. The catcher also has a .618 slugging percentage, a .467 on base percentage and has tallied 34 RBIs.

Shiver has been named the SoCon Player of the Week twice this season, in addition to being named the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week on February 9 and April 30. She has well over a 3.30 GPA as a double major in Sports Business and Finance.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00 and have reached sophomore athletic and academic status.

The Bears are set to face Samford in the SoCon Tournament second round on Thursday, May 7. The game was scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., but has been pushed back due to an earlier game running late.
