DURHAM, N.C. – USA Baseball released its midseason Golden Spikes Award watch list on Thursday and ETSU junior second baseman Trey York was one of the 60 players to be part of the prestigious group.
The award, which is sponsored by Major League Baseball and presented in partnership with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation, is given to the top amateur baseball player in the country.
York, who his hitting .414 (46-111) with nine doubles, five triples, seven home runs, 36 runs and 36 RBIs, is among the national leaders in numerous offensive statistical categories, while he was named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and has received a pair of Southern Conference Player of the Week honors this season. In addition, the Knoxville, Tenn., native landed SoCon Player of the Month honors in February.
York ranks fourth nationally in slugging percentage (.775), fifth in triples (five), 11th in total bases (86), 12th in batting average (.414), 19th in runs (36), 20th in RBIs (36), 46th in home runs (7) and 53rd in hits (46).
The Buccaneer junior reached base in ETSU’s first 21 games to start the season and hit safely in his first 11 games. York is tied for the team-lead with 18 multi-hit games and has registered 12 multi-RBI games in 2015.
York was one of 37 new players added to the list since its initial release on Feb. 10, while he’s the only player to represent the Southern Conference. The Southeastern Conference led all conferences in watch-list players, placing 15 on the midseason update, while 17 different NCAA conferences had at least one athlete on the list. The Pac-12 Conference had 11 athletes, while the Atlantic Coast Conference had eight on the list.
The watch list will continue to be a “rolling” list until May – when the semifinalists for the award are announced – ensuring that athletes can play themselves into consideration for the award. The 30-man preliminary list will be released May 7, while winner of the award will be announced on Tuesday, June 23, in Los Angeles.
