Mercer?s Mohanty Named SoCon Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s Arnav Mohanty has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played March 30 through April 5. Mohanty was a perfect 4-0 in all competition last week as the Bears earned conference sweeps over Chattanooga (7-0) and The Citadel (7-0).

The junior earned two straight-set wins at No. 2 singles last week. Mohanty picked up a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Chattanooga’s Lucas Plesky on Friday before downing The Citadel’s Peter Bleach (6-1, 6-0) on Sunday. With the two wins last week, the Sarasota, Fla., native moved to 3-2 in league matches this spring.

Mohanty teamed with his brother Arsav at No. 1 doubles for the Bears. The Mohanty brothers swept their doubles matches last week, earning an 8-2 win over Chattanooga’s John Peacey and Pavels Grigorjevs before claiming an 8-7 (8-6) decision over The Citadel’s Bleach and Artemie Amari.

Mercer (11-11, 4-1 SoCon) returns to action Friday (April 10) when the Bears host ETSU at noon.

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included ETSU’s Ismael Merino, Furman’s Adam Steryous, Chattanooga’s Lucas Plesky and Wofford’s Haris Poric.
