UTC?s Jones Named SoCon Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga’s Kayla Jones has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played March 30 through April 5. Jones was 2-0 in singles play and 2-0 in doubles action as the Mocs improved to 16-2 (4-0 SoCon) this spring with a 4-3 win over ETSU on Thursday and a 7-0 victory at Wofford on Friday.

Jones helped engineer a comeback victory for UTC over ETSU as the Mocs trailed 3-0 in the match. Trailing Lyn Yee Choo 5-3 in the third set at No. 1 singles, Jones staved off multiple match points and forced a tiebreaker, where she came away with a 12-10 win to claim the match, 0-6, 7-6, 7-6. It was her fourth straight singles victory this spring. Earlier in the match, Jones teamed with Samantha Caswell and the pair won at No. 1 doubles over Choo and Ana Gerbasi, 8-4.

In Friday’s match at Wofford, Jones dropped just two games in a 6-2, 6-0 win over Catherine Martin at the top singles spot. Jones and Caswell earned their seventh win in their last eight matches with an 8-4 victory over Kalli Karas and Lauren Reid. Jones and Caswell are 15-2 at No. 1 doubles this spring.

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Furman’s Ansley Speaks, ETSU’s Regina Nychytailova, Samford’s Stephanie N’tcha and Western Carolina’s Erin Maguire.
