SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Callie Brister and Western Carolina’s Jordan Garrett have been named the Southern Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday. The selections are made by the Southern Conference office.
Brister went 7-for-11 for a .636 batting average with three home runs, four runs and six RBIs in four games last week, as the Bulldogs went 4-0 to improve to 27-13 on the year with an 8-1 SoCon mark. The junior infielder extended her hitting streak to nine games with a hit in all four games, including two multi-hit games.
Brister drove in three runs and homered in game one of Friday’s doubleheader against ETSU. She followed with two hits, a run and RBI in game two of the doubleheader. The native of Tuscaloosa, Ala. saved the best for last, though, going 3-for-3 with two home runs, two runs and two RBIs in Saturday’s series finale. She claims her first SoCon weekly honor of the season.
Garrett compiled 2-1 record and a 0.95 ERA in 22.0 innings pitched in four starts for Western Carolina last week. The senior hurler allowed just three runs on 13 hits on the week while issuing 12 walks against 19 strikeouts.
Garrett was the tough-luck loser on Tuesday against ACC-foe Virginia, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts. She returned to the circle on Friday, starting both games of the Catamounts’ doubleheader against UNCG and going a combined 9.0 innings and allowing just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts on the day. Garrett wrapped up the week with a three-hit shutout in the series finale against the Spartans, striking out six batters en route to her 10th victory of the season.
The native of Henderson, N.C. claims her second Pitcher of the Week honor of the season.
