Baseball Player, Pitcher of the Week Honors Announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford first baseman Conor Clancey and Citadel left-hander James Reeves have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all games March 30 to April 5. The selections are made by the league office.

Clancey hit .526 in five contests last week, two of which came at No. 1 Vanderbilt and three of which were on the road at preseason SoCon favorite Western Carolina. Clancey hit two home runs and four doubles in addition to drawing four walks, scoring four runs and knocking in six. He also slugged 1.053 on the week, as six of his 10 hits went for extra bases.

After going 3-for-4 with two doubles in Wofford’s Tuesday contest at defending national champion Vanderbilt, Clancey collected seven hits in the series with the Catamounts. The Scottsdale, Ariz., senior went 2-for-3 with a double and a homer in Friday’s 11-8 win, driving in two and scoring three times. He also drew two walks.

Clancey was 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored Saturday, again hitting a double and a home run. He closed the three-game set with a pair of walks, a single and an RBI on Sunday.

Wofford (24-11, 3-3 SoCon) wraps up a nine-game road swing when it faces UNC Asheville on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before heading to Charleston, S.C., to take on The Citadel (15-15, 1-5 SoCon) for a three-game set over the weekend.

Also nominated: Trey Truitt (Mercer), Heath Quinn (Samford), Thomas Stallings (VMI) and Bradley Strong (Western Carolina).

Reeves threw the sixth no-hitter in Citadel history Thursday, striking out 14 batters and scattering five walks in a 4-0 win over SoCon-leading Mercer. The no-hitter was the first for the Bulldogs since 2002.

Reeves’ 14 strikeouts matched his season high and were one shy of his career high. The redshirt junior from Summerville, S.C., struck out at least one batter in each inning, including the side in the third and two in both the sixth and the ninth. He allowed just three runners to get into scoring position, with one of those coming on a two-base error.

The SoCon’s winningest active pitcher with 17 career wins, Reeves is 5-1 this season with 62 strikeouts against just 11 walks. He has an ERA of 2.83 and an opposing batting average of just .195, good for third and second in the league, respectively.

The Citadel heads to nationally ranked South Carolina on Wednesday before hosting Wofford over the weekend at Riley Park.

Also nominated: Jared Brasher (Samford), Taylor Edens (VMI), Tyler Powell (Western Carolina) and Matthew Milburn (Wofford).
