Guillorel Shatters School Record At Florida Relays
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Samford University track and field teams wrapped up competition at the Pepsi Florida Relays with more impressive finishes including a total of three new school records.
Freshman Arsène Guillorel has been consistently improving week after week in various distance events for the Bulldogs. This weekend the Pontchateau, France native's hard work came to fruition as he obliterated the Samford school record in the men's 5,000 meter race with a time of 14:06.51 and an overall first place finish in the talent laden event.
The time currently stands as the sixth fastest time in the nation and the broke Cameron Bean's record by nearly 23 seconds. Back in 2010 Bean recorded a time of 14:29.33.
The men fielded a team in the distance medley relay on the final day of events and came away with a third place finish and a new school record time. The team of Adam Jones, Nathan Hendershot, Brandon Hazouri and Guillorel posted a time of 9:56.50.
In the men's pole vault it was Gavin Gautreau who notched another Samford top-ten finish at the Pepsi Florida Relays. Gautreau posted a 4.95m mark on his way to take a fourth place finish in the event.
Keyth Fightmaster gave a gutsy effort in the men's high jump as he tallied a 2.11m mark to take a fourth place finish in the invitational section of the event.
The Bulldogs next challenge will take place in Starkville, Mississippi as the team will compete in the Alabama vs. Mississippi Border Clash hosted by Mississippi State University.
Catamounts Capture Six Event Victories at Terrier Relays
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Western Carolina track & field team picked up 31 top five finishes Saturday afternoon including six individual event victories. The team also had a pair of relays compete at the Florida Relays on Saturday in Gainesville, Fla.
Junior Dante Ortado picked up one of three victories for the men's side as he won the 200m with a season best time of 21.97. Sophomore Tremaine Kernes also ran in the event and finished fourth after crossing the line in 22.43.
Freshman Alyiah Riley won the women's 100m hurdles after stopping the clock at 14.78.
Junior Korie Bennett led a trio of Catamounts in the women's pole vault as she picked up the women's second victory of the day after clearing the bar at 3.50m. Senior Cara June Elyea took second at 3.35m while freshman Meghan Breden tied for fifth with a height of 3.20m.
Sophomore Dustin Triplett and redshirt freshman Thor Smith finished first and second, respectively, in the men's pole vault. Triplett tied a season best vault of 4.55m while Smith cleared 4.40m.
Junior David Johnson took home the men's final victory in the triple jump with a season best distance of 15.07m. Freshman Kevin Hires took third at 14.06m.
Junior Jasmin Brown was the final women's event winner as she took the top spot in the hammer throw. She won the event with a toss of 44.09m. Senior Kim Cannon took fourth with a distance of 40.70 while freshman Alisha Blackmon stopped the tape at 40.20 for fifth.
Sophomore Latasha Pride took second in the women's 400m hurdles with a time of 1:05.29.
Sophomores Chenell Bryan and Tiffani Lewis took second and fourth, respectively, in the women's long jump. Bryan posted a leap of 5.41m while Lewis stopped the tape at 5.38m.
Redshirt junior Adam Parker placed second in the men's javelin with a toss of 50.35m. Triplett took fifth in the event with a distance of 44.85m.
Freshmen Laney Browder and Madison Goode came in second and fourth, respectively, in the women's 5,000m. Browder's time of 18:49.62 was a season best while Goode stopped the clock at 19:35.49.
Redshirt junior Michelle Provost took third in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 12:04.13.
Junior David Johnson picked up a season best distance of 6.75m in the men's long jump as he finished third.
Blackmon took third in the women's discus with a toss of 35.23m while freshman Mateius Brown finished third in the men's discus at 42.86m. Sophomore Evan Albertson took fifth with a distance of 42.76m.
Brown earned a third place finish in the women's shot put with a toss of 12.20m while Cannon took fifth at 11.48m.
Kernes finished fourth in the men's 100m at 11.03 while the men also picked up a fourth-place finish in the 4x400m. Freshman Robbie Tompa, freshman Kaleb McEntyre, junior David Johnson and junior Dante Ortado teamed up to post a time of 3:26.05.
Lewis earned a fifth place finish in the women's 100m with a time of 12.42. Senior Taylor Feimster took fifth in the 200m at 25.11.
The women took fifth in both the 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay. Riley, Feimster, Bryan and Lewis teamed up in the 4x100 to post a time of 48.93. Pride, Bryan, Feimster and Riley took to the track in the 4x400 and finished with a time of 4:09.23.
Freshman Erin West came in fifth in the women's triple jump with a leap of 10.71m.
At the Florida Relays, the women's 4x400 relay team took eighth in the finals with a time of 3:48.35 while the women's 4x100m relay team finished 23rd with a time of 46.28.
The Catamounts will return to action this weekend as they host the Beynon Sports Catamount Classic.
Chattanooga Competes at Auburn
AUBURN, Ala. - University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior John Gilpin claimed the 3000 meter Steeplechase and led 11 Mocs in Top 10 finishes Saturday at the 2015 Auburn Tiger Track Classic at the Hutsell-Rosen Track.
Gilpin ran a personal best time 9:26.90, edging his opponent by 0.03 seconds at the line.
In the women’s 1500m, senior Amanda Cotter placed second with a time of 4:31.74, just six hundredths of a second behind top place finisher Emily Stevens of Auburn.
Sophomore Jessica York finished 14th in the race while junior Helenka Kis running a personal best time.
In the women’s 800 meter run sophomore Maddison Melchionna finished second behind UAB’s Jenna Wesley, easing past her previous best time a 2:13.65. Less than a second behind her in third was junior Rebecca Greenwall with a PR time of 2:14.48. Freshman Hannah Chamblin won her heat, placing fifth overall with a time of 2:14.87.
Freshman Emily Drouin placed third in her first-ever 3000 meter Steeplechase. She ran the course in a time of 11:20.28. Junior Keeley Stewart paced the Mocs in the women’s 3000m run with a personal best time of 10:28.32 and sophomore Anna Kate Chance posted her PR in the event with a time of 10:42.54.
The women’s 4x400 meter relay team Chamblin, Melchionna, Cotter and Greenwall placed sixth with a time of 4:02.85 while the “B” team, junior Makala Diggs, York, junior Kiaana Howard and anchored by Kis, placed ninth with a time of 4:15.92.
Freshman Drake Watson was third in the second heat and seventh overall in the men’s 400 meter Hurdles with a time of 55.34. In the men’s 3000 meter run, sophomore Paul Stuart finished eighth overall with a time of 8:37.85.
Also placing eighth was the men’s 4x400 meter relay team of junior DeQuantez Sandifer, Watson, junior Matthew Marshall and junior Trevor Janssen with a time of 3:33.25.
The Mocs return to action next Saturday at the Western Carolina Catamount Classic in Cullowhee, N.C.
Furman Wins Four Events At Terrier Relays
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Junior William Ivey won the 1,500m, sophomore Lee Shearer claimed first in the 3,000m Steeplechase, and the Paladin men’s and women’s 4x800m relay teams turned in winning times to lead the Furman track and field teams Saturday at the Terrier Relays in Spartanburg, S.C.
Ivey led three Paladins that finished among the top eight in the 1,500m, turning in a time of 3:51.74. Senior James Perez was sixth with a time of 3:59.83, while sophomore Nate Riech was eighth after crossing the line in 4:02.88. The Paladin women also placed three runners among the top 10 in the event, as rookie Emma Mashburn placed second with a time of 4:47.34, and senior Hannah Schilpp finished seventh at 4:56.97. Freshman Caroline Reed claimed tenth with a time of 4:56.97.
Shearer posted a winning time of 9:30.11 in the 3,000m Steeplechase, and sophomore Bryce Seymour turned in a top-five time in the 5,000m, placing fifth at 19:39.84. Sophomore Shauna Owen finished 11th in the 400m hurdles after posting at time of 1:07.88.
Furman’s men’s 4x800m relay team of Ivey, Riech, freshman Austin Sprague, and Perez led the field at 7:48.28, while the women’s team of sophomore Ann Sisson, sophomore Maddie Wolfe, freshman Jacquelyn Crow, and freshman Becca Cooley posted a time of 9:19.67 to take first place.
The Furman track and field teams will compete at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., April 10-11.
Three IC4A/ECAC Qualifiers Pace Keydets at High Point
HIGH POINT, N.C. - Mary Grace Lemon and Renee Reives qualified for the ECAC Championships, while freshman hurdler Davon Guerrier punched his ticket to the IC4A meet to lead the VMI track and field programs on the final day of the HPU VertKlasse Meet, contested Saturday in High Point N.C.
Reives posted her second ECAC qualifier of the weekend with a 44.03 meter (144'5") toss in the discus throw, which was good enough for a third-place finish. Lemon was ninth (38.89 M/127'7") and Elizabeth Johnston was 11th (37.13 M/121'10") as the Keydets continued to impress in the event just one week after putting three in the top-10 at Richmond.
Lemon got her own ECAC qualification in the hammer, stretching the tape to 52.70 meters (172'10") and finishing fourth.
On the men's side, Guerrier led the way with a win in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 56.05, and a fourth-place result in the shorter 110-meter distance (14.82) that qualified him for the IC4A meet. It was the first IC4A qualification in the short career of the true freshman.
Other results included Aron Long finishing seventh in the 200-meters (22.07), Avery Martin coming home fifth in the 800-meters (1:54.01) and Quincy Murphy placing seventh in the high jump (6'2 1/4").
Finally, Pete Reed was 11th in the 100-meters (10.98), Julian Jackson was 11th in the 400-meters (50.33) and Ben Greene was 10th in the 400-meter hurdles (57.49).
VMI track and field will return to action April 11, when the Keydets take part in the George Mason Invite in Fairfax.
ETSU Wraps Up Action on Saturday at VertKlasse Meeting
HIGH POINT, N.C. – The ETSU track & field program wrapped up a busy weekend of competition with limited action Saturday at the seventh-annual HPU VertKlasse Meeting at Dick Vert Stadium.
After having three student-athletes compete Friday at the 2015 Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Florida while also having a small contingent engage in activities at High Point, the Bucs again had a limited group of competitors Saturday at the VertKlasse Meeting.
On the men’s side, the Blue & Gold had a number of solid performances. In the men’s 400-meter hurdle participation event, sophomore Sam Barton turned in a ninth-place finish out of nearly 30 participants with a time of 57.485.
Sophomore Jacob Dunlap continued the momentum from yesterday’s top-15 mark of 13.62 in the shot put with successes today in both the discus and hammer. In the discus, Dunlap notched a 20th place finish in a field of competition featuring approximately 50 throwers with a 39.05-meter mark. In the hammer, the sophomore placed 10th out of approximately 30 competitors with a personal collegiate-best toss of 47.27 meters.
The ETSU track & field program again will be in action next weekend in split-squad competition at both the University of Tennessee Relays and the Beynon Sports Catamount Classic on the Western Carolina campus.
Wofford Track & Field Hosts Fifth Annual Terrier Relays
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College track and field teams continued to improve upon the outdoor season on Friday and Saturday, as the Terriers hosted the fifth annual Terrier Relays at the Viking Track at Spartanburg High School.
The meet featured men’s and women’s teams representing 27 different schools, marking the largest number of teams in the meet’s history.
The Terriers began the weekend with another impressive showing from sophomore Gaston Hayworth in the hammer throw. Hayworth continued a breakout season, breaking the school record once again with a 47.39 meters throw - good for a third place finish.
Wofford found early success Saturday morning as well. Freshman Anya Bunao ran the women’s steeplechase for the first time in her career, finishing fourth overall in the category.
The 1,500 meters also yielded positive results for Wofford. For the men, junior Alex Michaels finished first in his section. The 4:04.32 time proved tough for many to beat, as Michaels placed 12th among the men. For the women, Marella Angelo finished in 12th place as well, finishing the 1,500 meter with a time of 5:01.56.
Wofford ‘s track & field teams will compete again next weekend, heading to Cullowhee, N.C. to take part in the Catamount Classic, before the Southern Conference championships, hosted in Birmingham, Alabama on April 24-26.
UNCG Travels to Wofford and High Point Over the Weekend
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The UNCG men’s and women’s track teams competed in both the VertKlasse Meet in High Point N.C. and the Terrier Relays at Wofford College over the weekend.
In Spartanburg, Alexis Gardner finished the 100-meter race in 13.61.
In the 400-meter race, Meaisha Bullock set a new personal best time with a final time of 1:00.99.
Katlyn Adkins also had a new personal best, with a time of 1:09.35.
On the men’s side, John Elwood set a new best time as well, with a final time of 52.48 in the 400-meter race.
The Blue and Gold distance relay team of Joshua Crawford, Bryan Whyms, David Guthrie, Brandon King, Andrew Ramsey and Elwood came in first place with a final time of 10:54.48.
At the seventh annual VertKlasse meet on the campus of High Point University, freshman Luke Sumerford ran the 5,000-meter race in 15:48.67. Classmate Robel Tecle finished the race in 16:25.60 and sophomore Dakarai Shipp finished with a final time of 16:09.28.
Next week the Spartans will compete in the Aggie Invitational for a hometown meet in Greensboro.
