UNCG 4, Chattanooga 3

GREENSBORO, N.C.
– The UNCG men’s tennis team defeated SoCon member Chattanooga, 4-3, Sunday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.

The Spartans have won four of its last five matches improving to 10-8 overall and hold a 3-3 conference record. Chattanooga falls to 4-13 and has a 1-4 SoCon record.

In doubles, UNCG swept the doubles point winning all three matches. Junior Daniel Mack and senior Cameron Smith earned a 8-3 win against Nick Wingord and Luke Saunders at No. 3 doubles.

At No. 2 doubles, sophomore William Albright and classmate Warren Bryan clinched the doubles point with a 8-6 win against Pavels Grigorjevs and Nic Wilson. 

In the final doubles match, freshman Connor Thompson and senior Randy Phillips outlasted John Peacey and Lucas Plesky, 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. 

In singles, Phillips won in straight sets against Grigorjevs, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Phillips improved to 15-3 in singles and is 5-1 against SoCon opponents. 

Albright gave UNCG a 3-0 lead after defeating Gino Delavalle, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. Wilson earned a 7-5, 6-0 win against junior Gaston Murray at No. 5 singles.

With the Spartans leading 3-1, Mack clinched the victory against Saunders, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Plesky outlasted Thompson in the third set, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

In the final match, Wingord earned Chattanooga’s third point in a third set super tiebreaker against Smith, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 4 singles.

 

Mercer 7, The Citadel 0

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Mercer men's tennis team recorded its second straight sweep with a 7-0 win over The Citadel on Sunday afternoon.

Mercer won all three doubles matches to win the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead. The Bears then dominated from top to bottom in singles play, winning all six matches in two sets apiece.

With the win, Mercer improved to 11-11 on the season and 4-1 in Southern Conference play. The Bears' sweep of the Bulldogs also served as Coach Hayes' first career win over Citadel coach Chuck Kriese. Hayes was the men's assistant coach at Clemson in 1986 under Coach Kriese.
