Samford Tops ETSU Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- In a battle for first place in the Southern Conference Saturday, the Samford University women’s tennis team proved its mettle against a tough ETSU Buccaneer squad en route to a thrilling 4-3 Senior Day decision at held the Samford Tennis Center.
 
Prior to the match, the Bulldogs’ talented senior class comprised of Yasmeen Ebada, AnnMarie Lyon and Stephanie N’tcha were honored for all of their hard work and dedication.
 
With the victory, Samford (10-7, 4-0 SoCon) remained undefeated in league play this season and improved to 8-2 when competing at home in 2015.
 
ETSU (10-4, 3-2 SoCon) claimed Saturday’s doubles point by earning match victories on court No. 1 and No. 3. In the No. 2 doubles contest, the Bulldogs’ combination comprised of Ebada and Jessica Northcutt notched an 8-6 win over the Buccaneers’ tandem of Jessica Brumit and Regina Nychytailova.
 
With the triumph, Samford’s pairing of Ebada and Northcutt extended its winning streak to six-consecutive matches and improved its overall record to 11-3 on the season.
 
ETSU garnered an early 1-0 lead Saturday and added a pair of singles victories from Nychytailova on court No. 2 and Brumit on court No. 5.
 
The Bulldogs quickly overcame their initial deficit and bounced back with straight-set singles wins from Northcutt and Moolman to pick up a pair of overall team points.
 
With the match on the line, Samford’s N’tcha and Savannah Wood were both able to register huge three-set victories on courts No. 1 and No. 6.
 
On court No. 1, the Bulldogs’ N’tcha earned a critical 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 triumph over ETSU’s Lyn Yee Choo to extend her winning streak to five-consecutive matches. N’tcha closed out her home Samford career with a brilliant victory and improved her dual-match record to 11-5 on the season.
 
Wood, the Bulldogs’ talented true freshman from Woodstock, Georgia, pulled off the comeback win of the match Saturday and she overcame the Buccaneers’ Jayde Viccars on court No. 6, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. With her victory, Wood also tallied her fifth straight win and improved to 9-5 in singles play this spring.
